View Full Version : Will TL alloys fit a TJ?

Apologies in advance if there's already a thread dealing with this question; I did look, but didn't find one...

I was recently given (as in "Pay the rego, and you can have it") a 2000 TJ Advance. 299,500 on the clock (mostly highway k's, from a sedate driver), body in generally good condition (other than a rust hole under the bootlid, now nicely patched), good interior, runs well. Nice car, a bit bland, so I'm upgrading a few bits and pieces here and there - Verada woodgrain, bootlid spoiler, leather interior (if I can find a good set at the right price), window tint, and alloys.

I'm looking to replace the steel rims with a nice (factory) set of alloys, and have seen a great set of TL LS 15" wheels up for grabs, hence my question! I assume (always dangerous!) that they'd be identical to the TJ wheels as regards stud pattern, offset, etc, but thought I'd find out for sure first...

Same offset, PCD, etc.
Make sure the tyre sizes are the same to keep the speedo accurate

I've got 16 inch TJ alloys (with 215 X 60 X16 tyres) on a TL, so the other way round should be ok too.

Standard tyre size for both is 205 X 65 X15, so no problems there.

Make sure you get the wheel nuts with them too.

Thanks to you both for the speedy reply!

Yep, Max, these are 205 x 65 x 15, so that's fine.

The nuts... hmmm, they don't come with this particular set... There's a few sets on eBay: M12 x 1.5, with 19mm heads and 60 degree tapers OK?

The ones that came with the TJ 16 inch alloys have flat washers, not tapers. But you would need to look at the TL alloys to work out which you need.

You would need 20 of whatever type is suitable, and if you keep a steel wheel as a spare, make sure you keep 5 of the original nuts with the spare. lol

Ok - another question!

Purchased a set of alloys on the weekend (haven't picked 'em up yet).

No nuts with the wheels, so are they tapers or straight (look to be straight)? And, do Magna's have a "universal" straight mag mut, or are there different sizes? If so, which ones will fit these (anyone got a set they want to sell??)?

As before, many thanks in advance!

They have the flat washer type which is what you also need for the spare steel wheel. After market alloys generally have the tapered ones. The Mits factory ones also have bigger holes to fit the washer. Found that one out almost the hard way. Was trying to get MrSPL to paint my callipers and realised that the socket wrench won't fit into the hole. Had to use a socket set.

Just to further clarify, any wheels from TR ('91) through to TW ('05) will fit any of the models, they're all 5x114.3 PCD and correct offset in relation to rim width etc to fit correctly. You only need to ensure the correct nuts are used (those standard with the wheels), and in the case of the AWD's or Ralliarts ensure they clear the front calipers (so basically 16" up for those). Otherwise you can mix and match more or less all you like.

Many thanks, Vlad and Lugo!
