View Full Version : Alternator/Charging issues on TS V6 Manual with ABS & SRS

Hi guys,
I have a 1995 Magna V6 (exec) manual with SRS and ABS done around 162,000KMs. Every now and then when I start the car the Battery light and ABS light stay on and disappears after driving for a while, automatically. But before they disappear, there is a strange noise coming from the left side of the engine bay (the alternator is on the left side - near the firewall).
Also this strange noise appears when I start the car & these lights disappear within a couple of seconds of starting the car. (this noise feels like something is kicking in or some kind of initiation noise)

But this problem does not always happen though and never so far, did these lights come on while driving. Also when these lights stay on, the dashboard-lights, headlights (if driving in the night) seems to be a bit dull or less bright but not that bad at all and when these lights disappear then dashboard-lights, headlights (if driving in the night) seems to brighten up a little bit and seems to be in normal levels of brightness and not overly bright.

The Battery is new (4-5 months old) and I have checked the battery & it is getting charged and holding the charge well and this issue has been happening since a month or so before I replace the battery (say from the last 5-6months) - no starting problems either

Now the question "is the alternator stuffed or is it just the regulator". If it is the regulator, then does anyone know if the regulator for this model is 'an in-built one' or 'an external regulator bolted on the alternator'? Or what is the way of checking for it?

Please advise. Thank you very much.

Cheers,
Avinash

"what is the way of checking for it?"

By looking. V6 used Bosch or Mitsu alternator, either with an internal or external regulator.
Pull it out (not easy) and get an auto electrician to check it. Or scrounge around at a wreckers.
