View Full Version : Strange error code.

I've recently acquired a 2003 TJ Magna AWD and my Dad's mechanic has been giving it the once over and fixing any issues that need to be done.

It's been sitting around a lot for the past few months and hasn't had a battery in it apparently. It's now got one in it, but there's an error code (I think he said it's on the dash display) that says D9.

Has anyone ever seen or heard of this code before?? I can't find anything on this site about it and also can't see anything in the official workshop manual. :(

The other thing (that could be related to the code) is that there's apparently no power. The dash doesn't light up (I can't remember what else wasn't working) but the mechanic is hoping that it's just a fuse issue.

I know it's a strange post but just thought I'd ask about the error code anyway as I figured someone on here would have seen it in their travels.

Huge thanks in advance. :)

Does the message say "4D" ? I may be wrong but it doesn't sound like an error, it's just the trip computer powering up. 4D means AWD so you just hold down Mode for 2 secs until it beeps then again for "3.5" when that comes up and the trip computer should work.

Thanks for your reply munkeymanz. That's the first thing I thought of too when Dad mentioned the code. I knew of the 4D code thing from here on these forums but the D9 one has me stumped. Hopefully it can be reset/cleared just like the 4D one. :)

Do you have a digital or analogue instrument cluster?

If you are talking about the central display - central display can show you a lot, but error codes aren't within it's ability. If you have an analogue instrument cluster, it shows the trip meter details, if you have a digital cluster, it just shows time.
Error codes for engine, gearbox etc are read from the connector under the dash.
If the central display shows anything else other than "4D" when you hook up the battery, there is a problem - wiring, display defective, etc. Seeing the dash lights don't work, I would suspect electrical problems, maybe fuses.
(Had a headlight parker bulb not working. Wires chewed by mice. Got mice in your area? lol)

Thanks MadMax. Being a TJ series 2, it's got a digital instrument cluster with a central LCD display.

Next week I'll personally go and check exactly what this error is. I have a feeling it may just be the 4D thing and the mechanic has just misread it.
I'll also find out if the lighting thing is due to fuses. Hopefully I'll get to the bottom of it.

Thanks for everyone's input though. Much appreciated. :)

YAY. It's all been sorted. The code was in fact 4D and it's since been reset. (Thanks to the info/assistance gained on this site)

Great to know help is always available on here. Thanks again. :)
