My TJ Sports 2002 is now on its third 5sp auto. I had one go at 28 000kms and now another a few weeks ago at 56000km. Almost exactly 28 000km a piece.

Ive got another "reconditioned" auto, just like the other one. My car is in Mint condition , ive had it since new and is still under warranty. I dont drive it that hard either. They gave me 12 months warranty on the reconditioned box as my car runs out of normal warranty in 9 months.

Im 99 % sure this box will also fail/

Im actually looking at my legal options and at the Department of fair trading for advice.

I love my car but its starting to piss me off. I didnt have a car for 4 weeks the first time and 10 days the second time. No courtesy car either the second time even thought he cars been serviced 100% where I bought it. (canberra mitsu dealer)

Has anyone had any similar problems? I actually think something else in may car is causing the autos to fail, and that mitsubishi are ducking the issue.

What failed with them?
I have got a KJ series 2 witht the 5 speed tippy and it seems to be getting worse. The gear changes are no longer silky smooth, and when you use the tippy, some of the downshifts are savage. Taking it back under warranty next week. only 58,000 k's

Group buy on 5 sp manual transmissions I think :D , and the 100's of other little bits and pieces needed to do the conversion :doubt: . Ask them, no tell them, to replace it with a manual transmission 'under warranty' , for some reason they may not be too keen on this idea though.

Why are you getting a reco box when it's under warranty, that is not right to start with, it should be brand new

Warranty leaves the manufacturer at the discretion to repair OR replace.

Yes they might have the option to repair or replace but if they replace it should be a new box not a recon. If i was you i would be writing to uncle tom (Tom Phillips at Mitsubishi).
Also ring their complaints department at Mitsi's even though you are talking to your own dealer. Push the point that it's your third - not good enough.

you think after that amount of recon the next one they put in would be a new one

i just bought a new one with a 4spd, so i know its a bit different cos its not the 5spd, but i have noticed mine isnt as good as i think it should be, not as good as the box in the car i test drove which was also a 4spd. Add this to the scraping sound coming from the front end somewhere and a knocking sound coming front the rear suspension on a car that is only 942km's old and i am a little un-happy. I'll be eagerly awaiting what mitsubishi are gonna say at its 1500km service.

By replacing with a reconditioned transmission they are minimising the time that the vehicle is off road, as a typical transmission rebuild will take 4-5 days for a thorough job. You could always elect to have your own transmission repaired but be prepared for time without your car.

IMHO the only true instance where you are getting faulty components replaced is when new components are used. When reconditioned components are fitted you are really getting a repair in a quicker amount of time.

This is the time when servicing in the Dealer network pays off as they will be more inclined to fit brand new replacement parts as a goodwill gesture, otherwise they'll just meet their minimal obligations under the Trade Practices Act.
