Hi all,

decided that im gonna have a shot at tinting my own car ($40-$50 cant hurt compared to a proper tint) as summers coming up and virtually out of money :(

Im looking at doing the darkest legal tint (unsure of the % at the moment) I saw a mighty car mods ep about it and looked pretty straight forward.

Has anyone attempted it? Could you give me any hints or types of tint you used?

Thanks,
John

Just make sure you buy the correct tint. Like mcm say, the cheap stuff isn't uv proof.

Intend on doing it myself as well wont be until I do the vinyl.

35% tint is legal but that only has to be on the two front side windows the rest of them can be as dark as you like. I have 5% tint all round on my TF and i will say it sucks at times especially at night when there is very little light around for reversing or even in car parks and at intersections as well

Patience and preparation is the trick from what I've been told, my wagon has dark tint but I insisted on that when the dealer wanted me to sign on the dotted line.

Incorrect. Legally, across the country, ALL visible windows from the drivers perspective must have a VLT of 35% or higher, with the exception of the front windscreen which must transmit 75% VLT and only the top 10% of the screen is allowed to be tinted. Some states allow for the very rear side screens of buses, trucks, long vans etc with no restrictions, but this would not apply to a 'passenger' vehicle like the OP has. And in Vic, there is no such allowance anyway.

Police now also have devices that can check window tint. You could probably get away with 25-30% (visually) but if they test then you will be in trouble. A certain vic member on here had to spend a weekend painstaking removing their tint because they were defected for having 20% VLT tint.

Hex9 as said on the MCM vid. Buy quality tint. Speak to "Show Us Your Tints" he has a website as well. He's a reseller of Johnson tint. You might also want to budget for the tool kit which he sells for $50.

:yeahthat: 100%

Found out the hard way - my car = no more tint :-(

Tolerance is 5% in Tasmania for inaccuracy of the tester - so if your test says 30% its a pass - but can't speak for the rest of Australia..

guess ive been lucky then cause never had an issue perhaps it has something to do with the fact i don't do anything to attract attention

I've never been pulled over for anything other than the occasional breatho - and even they've been rare to be honest - but I had to have the car inspected when I transferred from SA to TAS. And therein lies the problem - you might get away with it most of the time, but get checked once and you have to remove it. If/when I re-tint, it will be legal just so I don't have to go through it again.

The rules may be different in QLD :-)
