Hi Belza,
the bee comb looking metal part is part of the sensor aswell as the little element in the middle of the camber. spray the *&#* out of it so there is no dirt left!!!! wait for it to dry before putting it back on.
ITS HELLLLLL DIRTY!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!

Seeing it is sitting behind a fairly effective air cleaner, I wouldn't expect it to get dirty at all. If it is, maybe it's time to look at the air filter to see if it needs replacing?
I could be wrong, never looked at the MAF on either of my two 3rd gens, no reason to.

Madmax, you're right, it was as clean as a whistle. Do you have any suggestions on how to fix the car running so rich?

Well Belzawagon, I had a look at you page and assume your talking about your 2005 TW. I will also assume it has done a few k's 100K+??. I would have done exactly what you did, then I would go for the plugs and check the plug seals in the tappet cover gaskets. Then I would check the leads for any visible signs of arching. Then I would think about cleaning injectors.... but before then I would be waiting for a few more posts on this forum :)

Short trips to the local shops really kills fuel economy, as well as numerous cold starts every day. My TL wagon can use much more than 15.6L/100 km on short shopping trips. Longer trips of more than 5 Km each should see better than 15.6L/100 Km. If you do much longer trips in steady traffic and get that number, it could be a dud oxygen sensor, or one of the fuel injectors is leaking. Why not put the trip meter on instantaneous fuel consumption, and record consumption with a warm engine at several constant speeds, like 60, 80 and 100 KPH? You will get feedback on these numbers being normal or otherwise when you post them up. No point replacing stuff if your numbers check out ok.

It's clocked up 78000. Parts are still 7 years old I guess

I will do that in my TL wagon and see what I get.
OK
TL wagon, 137,000 km, warmed up, air con off, driver's window open, 4 speed auto, left to shift for itself.
Average over the last 500 km = 13.5 L/100 KM
Steady speed instantaneous consumption:
At 50 KPH, 7.5 L/100 KM (Third gear)
At 60 KPH, 6.5 L/100 KM (Fourth gear)
At 80 KPH, 7.1L /100 Km.
I did notice though, that booting it in first gear from a traffic light bumps it up to well over 35L / 100 KM. lol
(Now if my calculations are correct, driving from Port Augusta to Perth at a steady 60 KPH should give me over 1,000 km to a tank. lol)

tw wagon got:
at 50 km/h, 7.5L
at 60 Km/h, 6.5L
at 80 Km/h, 7.9L
i assume thats fairly average. looks like o2 sensor seems to be acting already.
