hi all

since i've had the car there has been a "hissing" from the rear of the car
its most noticeable when crawling at low speed(e.g going through the maccas drive-thru and using a bit of acceleration to move it forward)

brake pads at the rear were recently changed by me as well as the guide pins lubricated with a lithium-based grease

any idea as to what it could be???

Dragging brake shoes, bent backing plate rubbing on a moving part.

(Could be a snake?)

Is this possibly because there is less load on the car, meaning less noise from the engine/exhaust/tyres/everything else, therefore noise is more noticable?

Have you tested this from outside the car? Does it come from any wheel in particular?

seems to come mostly from drivers side rear and seems as if the brakes are dragging

leak in exhaust

dont think so as it gets louder when the brakes are applied

Had a similar problem in my old te. Could be dust covers

Is it a consistant sound or does it seem to pulse a bit. If it pulses it could be the handbrake shoes dragging

I'd be inclined to say its the wear indicators on the rear brake pads. Have you checked to see how pad is left?

Hes already done this...

John, Dad had a similar issue with his KJ wagon. Turned out to be the handbrake not quite disengaging and therefore the handbrake pads were rubbing. Replaced both units along with the cables as they were clogged and it works perfectly now. He used to fix it temporarily by pulling the handbrake up just slightly while moving at about 10km/h and it would stop briefly.

Rush how much did that cost your dad in parts? Did he get new cables and new handbrake shoes or a complete assembly w/hub?
I'm pretty sure I've got the same problem. Matches john's description to a tee. Back end hisses like a snake on crack. Gets plenty of attention from all da chicks when I do mainies through the kfc carpark but for mostly the wrong reason.

Already adjusted the handbrake to be tighter and has not helped.

No idea sorry mate on cost.

Would have been new items as that's how dad runs. Unless new isn't available

ok abit of good and band news

good news is that my mechanic solved my hissing problem(which was the O/S/R wheel dragging).but this has now lead to a constant squeak on the rear wheels which only goes away when the brake pedal is pressed

im thinking guide pins but anything else?

Yeah I have/had this hi pitch squealing too at low speeds. Drove me nuts until I figured out what it was. Seemed to have fixed it with a gentle apply of the handbrake at low speed. Been good for a few weeks now. My handbrake was retensioned last year, perhaps it's going out again : /

The cause was the rear right wheel dragging.but now a a squeaking noise appears at all speeds and stops when the brakes are applied
