Blew the fuse for the interior light on the TJ while swapping globes.

Checked interior fuses, all ok. (That's where you would expect the fuse to be, right?)

Checked fuses under the bonnet.

15 Amp fuse in the yellow rectangle was blown. Lifted yellow bit, replaced fuse.

I'm a bit confused, I thought those fuses ran the ECU and other important bits, but the cover shows pictures of what I now assume are the interior light and the horn.

Why have the yellow lock down bit if these are only minor fuses? So which fuses keep the ECU settings alive? Or did Mitsu do some major rewiring of the under bonnet fuse box some time in the third gen cycle?

Over here its the radio and interior lights. The ecu fuse i believe is in the footwell fuse nox. The horn fuse oddly enough isnt marked and is one of the 4 fuses outside of the imterior fuse box cover plate, toward the front of the car. But this is a usdm diamante so it could be different.

OK, they are the interior lights (15A) and radio.

So why the yellow lock down plastic bit? Strange.

Fuse 10 (10 amp) is for IOD which is for things clocks and radio settings. Fuse 11 (15 amp) is a multipurpose fuse which is for the following:
Traction Control, Engine Control (although there are two other fuses for it as well, 20 amp #15 and 10 amp #17), ELC-4A/T, AC, centre display, ABS, SRS, cruise control, combination meter, BEM, trunk lid and fuel door opener, personal lamp, room illumination lamp, trunk room lamp, ign key illumination lamp and clock.

So when you blow the interior light fuse, it takes out the centre display, ABS, SRS etc. ?
Just as well I bought a stack of spare fuses!
Not much logic in the way Mitsu wired up things, and the labels on the fuse boxes isn't too much help - I guess next time there is a problem, I will need to check every fuse in the car, I was hoping to avoid that.

. . . . .goes off to study the manual a bit closer . . . .

There are separate fuses for the ABS, SRS etc in the cabin fuse box. If you read the manul, you would have known to turn off the lamps before removing and especially before fitting new bulbs. That is, switching them off instead of leaving them in the DOOR mode and if not possible then close the doors and wait for the lights to turn off. Otherwise it will arc as you bring the bulb close to the holder.

Hmmmm, funny how in many years I have always found the fuse I need to look for ..... wait for it ..... off the fuse box cover

Each fuse and each relay is numbered, as are they in the fuse box

Blowing the light fuse does not take out the ABS and SRS

Arcing, yes, saw that. lol Easier to simply pull the light out of the roof and replace the globe that way.

Where in the manual does it cover that? Can't find it at the moment.

Mal, I'm not yet up to speed with what all those little pictures on the fuse box covers refer to, trying to get up to speed here. Remember, I'm only a beginner! lol

Beginner with 6K+ posts from 2005.....

Not sure if it mentions it in the magna/verada manual but definitely says that in the Outlander manual.

There is a diagram that I found on the net that explains all of the symbols on the fuse box, and tells you exactly which electrics that fuse covers.

It helped me a lot when I couldn't recognise which fuse I needed for my boot light. I can't find it at the moment though.. Might be covered in my Gregory's. I will have a look tonight.

lol Info is in the most obvious place, in the "Operator's manual" lol

TL/KL one, it's page 9-3 and 9-4.

Scans coming up! lol This info might be useful to some. Doesn't explain why two fairly minor fuses need their own yellow plastic cage though!

It's all bad when you replace that fuse and you forget to push that yellow case down. Had me wondering for a good minute on a long tiring day.

All good. You will know for next time. lol

If that globe ever needs changing again, I will pull the fuse first. Too easy to jam the new glove above the active contact, short to earth and blow the fuse. Problem solved. lol

You live and you learn. (Unless of course, you think you already know everything . . . . . lol)
