Hi to all mechanical masterminds,

So here's my problem - When I first take off or I accelerate as you normally would the revs drop and my car coughs and splutters. It basically acts as if its run out of fuel. Occasionally we can smell a fully type smell coming from somewhere. I also have to sometimes ride the clutch to get moving (which can't be good) and going uphill means the car chugs and i can only get up really slowly cause anymore than 1cm of acceleration and the car starts spluttering.

I have already replaced the 3 front sparks and changed the fuel filter, the fuel pump and cleaned up the air filters. I am going to get a major service done to have all the back spark plugs and all the leads replaced as well as getting the injectors replaced as I heard that may be the problem.

Pretty much if anyone can pinpoint what the problem is, it would save me a lot of time and money.

Thanks guys

Generally with these cars the symptoms you have described are caused by the Distributor, start there

A faulty Oxygen sensor can do that as well, as I found out earlier this year.

I made a thread about it here:
http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=96408&highlight=oxygen+sensor

With a faulty sensor on these you don't get any indication of it other than less than optimal fuel economy (most likely) or worse case symptoms like I outlined in the post. Oxygen sensors aren't normal service items, you have to get them specifically replaced. In most cases, people just drive around with a faulty sensor! Even if this isn't the case, if you haven't had it replaced at all (or for many years), it would be beneficial to replace it anyway.

The Oxygen sensor input is ignored on a cold start (such as overnight or after several hours) as the Oxygen sensor has to heat up for it to work properly. This doesn't take long, but if you cold start the car and it is fine for the first couple of minutes I would definitely say the sensor is the likely culprit.

I should have said in the last post that an easy way to test if it is the O2 sensor is to unplug it! Definitely not a solution, but if it stops showing the symptoms you have the answer to your issues.
