I have been told by an Auto Transmission specialist that the transmission pump has died. They have quoted me $2200 to repair and service the transmission. Is that a fair amount ?
I was going to my local bottle shop and when I entered the car park noticed that the auto change was not really working. When I came out of the shop I noticed a hell of a lot of oil coming out of the car.
When I tried to put it into gear, there was absolutely nothing. I had it towed to the specialist and he called with the news re the pump.
Does that cause the oil to leak? Or would it be something else? And do you think it is a reasonable price to pay for repairs? It has done 234,000 kms and has been a very reliable car.

Wait up.

The tranny is losing fluid? Sounds more like a hose or a seal to me, unless it lost so much oil that the pump died? One would imagine that the synchro's would fail before the oil pump.

Sounds like you need to take it elsewhere

Check and fix the leak, refill and see how you fair

not sure if this helps but had the transmission changed and reconditioned torque convertor put in my magna for about $2000 a few years ago when my transmission died.

I'd be inclined to say that guy is taking you for a ride.....I would stick with Magmagna's response. See if you can find the leak and repair yourself, if not try a different mechanic because that repair bill is close to rebuild teritory.

The transmission pump "died" because it ran out of fluid to pump, I imagine.
Pumps don't just "Die", well they can, if they are asked to chew up parts of the wave spring, but you would hear some unusual noises and that would be unlikely to cause a big leak unless something smashed its way out of the trans case.

Mechanic probably had a quick look, assumed the worst and quoted that cost just to see if you were serious enough to go with it. If you gave him the go ahead, then he would have a good look at it and do a serious appraisal.

Needs serious eyeballing by someone who knows what they are doing though.
