Hey all,
I went about putting some Kicker 6x9s in. Turned out the magnet was just way too big! Too low and too wide! It was hitting the boot springs (rods). Spacers that were readily available were too small. The carpet seems to be getting in the way, and I may have to trim the bottom of the cover to top it all off. For the meanwhile, I cut a hold in the speaker cover and it looks surprisingly clean! I thought I could grab a couple of covers later if there is a better way to do it.
So my question is - Is there any real issue with this kind of install? Also, is there a cleaner way that I have somehow missed? Short of getting a magnet to fit within my limitations...
Thanks

Bought some 6X9 spacers at supercheap, they slant the speakers towards the front and give the magnets lots of clearance. Used them in a station wagon, should work in a sedan too.

I looked at angled spacers as they are exactly what I need... Though the clearance between the window and parcel shelf is very limited! Specially considering the high side of the spacer is where the gap becomes less. One thin enough to fit under mayyyy just do it. I am more doubtful than positive though :S

An issue with not using the standard speaker covers is that it encourages thieves to break in and try and steal the sterero. They think if you have good speakers, it is likely that you have a good head unit too.

When i did the 6x9s in my Ralliart, they didn't fit properly.
5 minutes, some scrap wood and some black spray paint.

I know where you are coming from burfadel. I did want it hidden, though if I cant I just cant. Yes I could have found speakers with a smaller magnet, though I really liked these ones! Anyway, I ended up speaking to an installer and he said my way or Matt's way is really my only choices keeping these speakers. So thats that!
Thanks for all the replies :)

I know mine only had like 3mm clearance on the boot spring things...
What model kickers did you get?
Mine are very deep (Kicker KS693) and they still clear, Just...

That is extremely interesting considering I own the same speakers :S
They are way too deep! Is your speaker mounted to the same place as the originals?

yeah, they are in the factory mount spots?
They just clear the spring things.
No spacers or anything, I did a straight swap..
Mine are going good so far too, they go hard in the rears but I'm changing the fronts to Polk audio ones as the kicker ones seem to lack treble.. (tweeters are pretty shit tbh)
Anyway!

It was about 17mm or so too deep :S I have no idea how on earth it worked for you :S
I bought them for their bass considering I dont want a sub woofer. They are pretty damn good!
I went with JL fronts. Glued the tweeters to the bracket with some JB weld :)

I got the same 6x9's and yeah they are way too big! Had to get some mdf spacers from autobarn (this is a for a wagon). I can't see how a sedan would fit these speakers in the stock locations, without pushing aside the boot brackets. The soundstreams i had wouldn't fit in a sedan and they were no where near as big as these kickers.

What series of kicker 6x9s are you using?? I have had both DS and KS series 6x9s in my tf with no clearance issues of having to use spacers..

Strangely, I have never seen the maximun 6x9 speaker depth for a 3rd Gen sedan posted anywhere......yet...

Well i can tell you that the DS693s are 83mm deep and just had one side by side with my KS ones and there is a mm difference KS are 84mm deep.
Also as for not being very bassie i have to agree. This is why i took some great advice from a fellow QMD member and removed my 6x9s and just ran front splits and twin 12" subs, and after he tunned it wow sounded great..

Maybe Ive forgotten what real bass sounds like... I havent had a subby in 8 years nor do any friends have one. I had the stock 6 x 9s non-amped to compare to :P
Funny how so many of you had them fit. Its simply way off for me! And even if I was able to move the springs, its not like it only has to JUST be moved. The 15mm spacer wasnt enough and the carpet started getting in the way. Trimming it may have not worked out so well either.

Cars with decklid spoilers usually have different torsion bars for the decklid to compensate for the extra weight of the spoiler. Could be the difference some people are having with the same speaker fitting some cars but not others?

Sounds about right, these speakers would definitely hit the torsion bars in my old TJ II.
