View Full Version : Strut click when steering?

Two days after I bought my 2001 TJ Wagon, it started making a clicking, creaking noise every time I steer to the right. I think it's always happening at the same angle, sometimes twice.
I had it in to service the breaks, and told the guys to check the CV joints, as I first thought that's where it comes from. The CVs look fine, and when taking a closer look (listen), it seems like that sound comes from the strut top. So the mechanic tried to tighten it, but it was already tight....
The guys told me not to worry about it as long as it doesn't get worse....
Any thoughts?

Strut top mounts are probably stuffed

I think i've got the same problem in my car it makes a clicking sound from the left when turning slowly but not when the wheel is turned when the car is stationary. The CV's are good. Also when going over a rough road or speed bump the vibrations seem to be transmitted strongly to the steering wheel. The car has 170000 km's.

It does make that sound when the car is stationary as well in my case.

Basically, I'm just wondering if that is something that is likely to become worse soon. And if so, how much of a hassle it is to get it changed. I saw mitsfix got the mounts for a hundred bucks, but I have no idea how much labour is involved.
I would very much like not to get into it as I will have to sell the car in a couple of months - I'll be going overseas. Will do some Ks before that though.

Also, has the car had any suspension work done? If the strut top and base where the spring seats isn't lined up properly it can give that same noise when turning the wheel

That's beyond my knowledge...I only bought the car a few days ago.
It did start from one day to the next. I drove it the first couple of days without noticing it, and I'm sure that I would've heard it earlier if it would've been there.

check the strut out as in when you look at the strut its self you will see a hole about 5mm across on the wheel side of the strut,
then have a look up at the strut top and there should be the same hole directly above it.......

if its not directly above it the knocking would 99% be caused by that in my opinion
(seen it a couple times before)
its a simple fix take the strut out and clamp the spring down with spring compressors
undo the top nut and position the strut top so you can look down straigt through both holes
do the nut back up then loosen the spring clamps------
re install the strut :) hope you can follow that.

Thanks I will have a look at it. Don't know if I'll get into it myself. I'm not experienced with that kinda stuff and I have a very limited range of tools available at the moment.
Basically, I was wondering if this could become a problem that needs attention soon. I will have to sell the car in a few months time because I'll go overseas.

I also noticed that I can hear a sound like air being pushed out when pushing down the car by hand there.
