View Full Version : Headlight timer only stays on for 20 seconds?

Hey guys. I've found that my headlight timer (flashing the highbeams briefly when the cars off) only keeps the lights on for 20 seconds. I believe its meant to be 30? Is there a way I can actually extend this, or something? It frustrates me because by the time they go off I'm still out locking the gate.
Cheers.

Flashing the lights briefly gives you the standard headlights on time, try holding it on longer, this is supposed to extend the length of time the headlights stay on.
(In theory, according to the handbook. Don't use that function myself, but I can see it would be useful to some.)

When you flash it as you say...
Instead of flashing it once the keys out, keep holding the high beams on until you hit the desired time..
I have set mine at 50 seconds.. which seems perfect in my opinion.

You sir, win the cookie...
Just went down, had a fiddle with it all. turned the key to IGN, turned it back to off, held down the highbeams for 60 seconds, back to IGN, back to off, removed key, tapped the high beams, and bam! On for 60 seconds. So awesome.
Is there anyway I can trigger this feature without flashing the highbeams? I really like it.
WTF Magnas came out with this feature? If you tell me all of them ima be so pissed!

Any Mitsu with the soft dim and delayed off interior lights can do this, BEM function. (AFAIK)
Didn't know the timer could be adjusted on a permanent basis though.
I vaguely remember it featuring in a commercial, may not have been a Mitsu commercial though. "Follow me home" function. Google it.

Yeah, from TH onwards atleast (if it had a BEM module seperate to the ECU, I think I've heard?)
turn key on, turn key off, flick your high beams and see what it does?

Soft dim? Are you referring to the dome light fading out? If so mine doesn't have that yet I still have the security/follow me home lighting.

Holy sh*t... Didn't even know I had this feature. lol
I feel like a new S-Class Mercedes owner, so many features that you're finding them months into owning it.

Haha, I didn't know my car had central locking from the drivers door either until I flicked the drivers door lock when a bogan came up to my car with a stubbie, and I heard all the snibs lock in the car. Winning!! Powered out of there quick smart.

Soft dim is found in Lancers and some other Mitsu models with BEMs (wife's 2004 Lancer has soft off), hence my reference to "soft dim OR delayed off", my mistake using AND when I should have used OR - No Magna I've ever owned has "soft off" either, even though my TL is 3 months younger than the Lancer.
Just increased my headlight on time from the standard (15 sec?) to 30 seconds, thanks for the tip.

Oh wow, and after giving advice on this feature last night, I had no idea about the ability to extend it! Morsolo's right, you really do keep learning! I might set mine for longer.
Also, Veradas have soft dim interior lighting.

Just goes to show I've never owned a Verada. lol

Someone else can no doubt answer this, but did Magnas with sunroof have soft dim at all? Because I know the Ralliart Magna as an example, got regular lighting unless you ordered it with a sunroof, then they gave it Verada map lights etc. - would they have then given it soft dim too?

AFAIK there are two types of bem.
Hi-series and mid series. What is in what ,i dont know,
Its the hi series which gains the dim as i got this when i changed my bem over from the TH the KJ one,and interior lights off on a timer when you leave the doors open.
Come on Mike or Mal,clarify all the differences.
EDIT....just went and checked mine,Was set up for 11 seconds,Reprogrammed it for 30 seconds, works perfectly.

I think I've read it before, but can the BEM be swapped out for a higher/newer model? I thought the BEM and ECU were paired? Or am I thinking of something else.
I'd like to go down to the wrecker and heist the KH BEM to replace my TH one, but only if I can get some hektik fading out dome lights. Bitches love fading lights.

The BEM and ECU are paired, but if you're prepared to lose the immobiliser function it could be done.

Oh bother! Above is wrong, 2004 Lancer does NOT have the "follow me home" function. Been playing with it to no avail. Maybe later/current models?

Heh, i still remember what it felt like to buy one of these babies brand new, back in the day. I remember comparing the list of features against Fords, Holdens and Toyotas and thinking the gap between them was huge. My KH Verada looked and felt like a princess next to those clunkers of the day. Still does IMHO.
Sure i paid a lot at the time, but i've had that car for 12 years now, talk about an investment, and its faithfully looked after me and mine over that time, with many thousands of comfortable and enjoyable kms.

LO!
You mean.. I've had this car forever and never knew of this feature?!
SuFz :ninja:

Most likely not. The BEM only came in in the H series on wards. The fading lights in the KE and KF (correction) were probably controlled by the ETACS unit (which got incorporated into the BEM from H onwards). My KS had dimming lights but no follow me home light and was controlled by the ETACS. I installed a separate unit (headlight controller unit) which turned the lights on automatically with 10secs delay and turns them off after a present amount of time.

From my understanding, there were a couple of subtle differences in the BEM specs.
TH - Mid series, does light delays etc and no soft fade,
KH - High series - adds soft fade. Curiously the system for the sunroof was odd, and if you get a time like the windows UNTIL you open the door when it cuts the power to the roof rather than extend the timer.
TJ - same as TH except with timer for lights off when the doors are open
KJ - same as TH except with timer for lights off when the doors are open (this was needed as MMAL realised that the Verada rear lights couldn't be switched off if the car was being worked on with the doors open for long periods)
TL - Same as before but with interior lights on when the key is removed from ignition
KL - Same as before but with interior lights on when key is removed from ignition.
KE/F XI- ETACS system which is very different, you get the light fade, but rear map lights they are not operated with the interior light, but each rear door.
KE/F EI - normal Magna system.
BEM cars ALL get the programmable headlight timer.
Sorted.

TJ Exec has timer to turn off the boot light as well.
2004 Lancer has soft fade interior light, light on when key out, so I assumed it would have the "follow me home" bit as well. WRONG! Thanks Mitsu! Doing a great job of keeping me guessing.

This is because other Mistu cars use ETACS which is an in house system. BEM's come supplied as an off the shelf unit from BOSCH.
