View Full Version : 91 TR 2.6L, 2 Questions: Cooling hoses and idle problem

Hi all

I went for a spirited drive in my 91 TR 4cyl today and blew the cooling hose that runs under the throttle body behind the fuel rails (I always seem to have cooling hose problems in second gens). Managed to spot the water temp quickly and kept it under 3/4 though and towed her home. My question is, does anyone know if there are any hose brands that are stronger, longer lasting etc.. or are there hose bandages that I could wrap around the hoses for better security? Or would they just cause high pressure issues and cause other miscellaneous leaks? If so am I just better off just going a genuine hose?

Secondly, another idle problem which is intermittent, high and low idle. It most commonly idles high 1600rpm on cold, then settles to around 1000rpm in park or neutral but can sometimes settle to 750rpm after a short drive in normal to cool weather. After the car has run for quite a while (or in hot weather) it idles higher, particularly with the A/C running: it idles too low in gear (500rpm) and too high out of gear (1200rpm). After I blew the hose and started the car again it idled at 2000rpm in park, but had irratic behaviour around the 1800rpm area. Does this sound like a common ISC problem, or should I try TPS first? Or could it be something else?
Note: If I don't use the air con, some days it can idle nicely around 700rpm in gear and 800-900rpm out of gear, but not too often.

Sorry about the long post and the common topics, but couldn't find what I was looking for in search.
Cheers.

Hi Shamous,
A new standard hose for the throttle body will probally last the next 10 years. I would also be testing the other hoses under presure (need a special tool) and feeling all the hoses to see if they crunch.
As far as the idle goes I would start with giving the idle speed controller a good clean, with carby cleaner. From memory it is held in with two 8mm bolts, near the throttle body. Give the throttle body a good clean too. Madmagna has a great write up how to do this.
Good Luck.

Cheers mate. I changed the hose as well as 2 other hoses that I was not willing to trust. Turns out the one that blew had the original date stamped on it, April 1991 !! It was so perished I'm surprised it lasted so long. I pulled a few things apart and cleaned the throttle body, flushed the cooling system a few times and cleaned some connections, it now seems to be idling as close to perfect as I can get it. In drive with A/C on sometimes it goes down to 500rpm, but with a/c off it's a neat 750 in neutral and 600-650 in drive. After 100km city driving this arvo it appears solved (touch wood!)
