Ok well I now have my car at the stage I would like it to be at - minus the exhaust! I am looking preferably for a bolt on exhaust of some sort onto a TW LS AWD. Can anybody recommend a make and model? I know of the lukey LR2779 and the bolt on equivalent, are they any good? And how much should I be paying to have a muffler bought and installed if anyone knows.....

Where abouts in NSW are you mate?
If you're in Sydney, I recommend Precision Mufflers in Croydon. I got a Redback muffler, Suburu resonator, and cat-back plumbing in anodised steel for $350. John is the bloke there. Tell him Rob in the white Verada sent you and he will sort you out.

The best exhaust mod to do for the AWDs is to fit the HM headers (which were the OEMs for the Ralliart Magnas). The headers remove the drone and also return the lost powers due to the restrictive y pipe section. Secondly, fit the muffler from the Sports/VRX series (if you can get one in decent condition from wreckers) or get the lukey (which is the OEM manufacturer).
Fitting of the header cost me $100. I pressume fitting the muffler would be cheaper as it is easier to do.
I got the header from this eBay seller (http://myworld.ebay.com.au/boltonperformance). Ask if he can source more. Note you must mention the AWD version as there is a slight difference between the AWD and the FWD versions.

I'm in the pennant hills area. $350 sounds pretty good. Will the headers produce a nicer note than a new muffler though?
The HM Headers smooth out the exhaust flow which reduces the drones, esp those with the sports mufflers. It also produces a nice soft burble sound.

I also think if you can afford it a good set of headers is a valuable investment. Then if you want more sound swap the rear mufffler for something a little smaller as extractors wont change the sound much.

I'm just about to install the HM headers on my VR AWD (Thanks to Madmagna for sending the headers) so I will be interested to feel/hear the difference. Magna04awd I only live 10-15mins north of you, so you're welcome to come and have a look at the headers before I fit them.

Thanks for the offer, still considering the costs of installing everything however. But by the sounds of it, headers look like the way to go!!

Mistakenly posted sorry
Just as the other members have mentioned. Go the HM perry headers with Y pipe and fit a straight through muffler from a VRX or Lukey equivalent. Leave the middle section stock. Net result will restore around 7-10 Kw and give you better off idle acceleration and midrange as well as a much gruntier yet not too loud exhaust note. These are the exhaust mods I have done to my AWD also (except with a stainless straight through muffler). Best bang for your buck mod on a stock AWD you can do.

I finally got around to fitting my HM's over the aus day weekend.
Idle noise is slightly deeper and I reckon a tad lumpier.
Cabin noise has decreased, with less drone.
Off idle throttle response, very minimal difference.
Mid range around 3800rpm and above pulls better, with better mid range throttle response for twisty roads !
Top end seems better.
The exhaust note through the mid to high revs now has a more aggressive "raspy" sound.
Overall I'm happy with it, and it took me around 2.5-3hrs for the install..........380cams will probably be the next mod, although I should be just spending my money on my Evo X !!!!

I contacted your seller - wanted more for the headers alone than I can buy them from HM direct and have them installed.
Are you going to fit a straight through muffler or just leave it as is?

I have a VR, so it has the VRX sports rear muffler and system from factory.
I replaced the muffler on mine a while back (LR2779 or whatever model #) and it improved the sound a bit, don't know if it did anything for power over the Sports muffler though.
It did drone - I was listening to some very loud music during the week, cruising along and realised I could hear the exhaust when I changed throttle position. But other than that the drone wasn't intrusive to me - I could hear it but it was never over bearing.
Yesterday I replaced the headers with HM's version. There's a good weight saving, it did bolt on simply and I'm very very happy to have replaced the factory T join with a proper Y pipe.
I've only driven it twice and can't notice any difference in power. I will go to WSID and compare performance as it's the only mod since I went last time.
I have noticed that it revs much better in neutral - more free.
Unfortunately for me, the thing I've noticed now is that my rear muffler's hanger hits the chassis rail sometimes - I'll be taking it back to the exhaust shop that originally put it on - if they turn the hanger around on the muffler, it won't hit any more.
On throttle lift when I was revving it, there's a rattly, raspy sound from around the new pipes - I don't know if this is just rasp from extractors, or something wrong near the flex join. I'll see if I can get the exhaust shop to have a listen with it on a hoist, make sure there isn't a leak.
Overall though, I scored the HMs cheap and am very happy after installing it myself.
You shouldn't really have any rasp as such, as long as you haven't deleted or swapped resonators over, you should just get a beefier sound. HM's with Y pipe are quieter than stock units in that they pretty much get rid of the drone around the old y pipe.
OK cool. My bad, didn't realise the VR also had the straight through muffler like the VRX.

Oggy, I'm getting the same raspy rattle..........it sounds like a heat shield is resonating but stuffed if I can find anything wrong. It happens at about 1500-2000rpm or so.
That is why I removed mine. It is just a combination of extractors and thin heat shields.

Well the noise has gone..........I reckon its probably the flex joints needing a layer of carbon to shut them up !!!!

Yep! mine was the same for a week or 2.
The thing is now to fit 380 cams. The sound is wicked and noticeable power difference.

I will probably do that when the timing belt gets replaced.............although I have only done 48k on the motor, BUT its 8 years old so not worth the risk of a broken belt.
I hope the cams are worth it !

When you say drone is this for a standard exhaust or a sports exhaust set up? I don't get a drone but then I really can't hear my exhaust, I will look at getting a set up similar to what you have recommended to get some extra HP!
the drone is more noticeable with sports muffler and only at certain revs like during steady cruise or slow hill climb.

I just picked up a TL AWD last week and it has the restrictive rear twin pipe muffler on it. Is there a definite Lukey part number for the unrestrictive one and the approximate cost?
I run their LR2779.......... long time since I bought it, think it was around the $300 mark.

I can't remember the exact part number, however, it is the same as all the sports variants of the AWD like the TJ Sports AWD, TR VR AWD, TW VRX AWD and the KW GTVi AWD. The FWD versions can fit but just the muffler, the pipework before the muffler is different so needs a cut and weld as the FWDs go over the right rear axel whereas the AWDs go under the rear diff. While you are at it, see if you can source a set of HM headers for the AWD. Makes a huge difference.

Thanks for your reply. Do you think the muffler shops would carry the AWD rear muffler or just go woth the modified fwd type? I did notice the HM headers make a difference to the output a bit also. it does need a little more low down torque and hopefully these mods will achieve it cheaply.

Apart from the Lukey identified by zero (previous page if you missed his post), I have seen references to Magnaflow part number 14586 being used successfully (see alscall's post in this thread (http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=78921)). My car is currently fitted with a Redback (part of a cat-back deal, don't know part number sorry) but I'd prefer something a bit less noisy...

I have looked in all the threads that I can find in the AWD subforum re: sports mufflers and I think I am on the right track, but I just wanted some confirmation from other, more experienced, owners.
(I did not think it necessary to start a new thread)
Will a factory standard KW GTVi AWD muffler(i.e. single tip less restrictive) bolt on to a completely standard TL awd?
For the last 2 months I have looked and looked for a VR AWD muffler(or car wrecking) without success.
I have managed to find a GTVi AWD one at the right price and located where I can drive to pickup rather than pay postage.
(buying my TL is a bit of a financial stretch at present, so I need to keep costs down)
The only issue I see is that the KW GTVI/Verada rear bumper bar is bigger than the TL Magna bar.
Will the tip of the KW single outlet sports muffler protrude too far back?
If this is the only problem, I can probably get the single pipe outlet tip "cut and shut" to make it a bit shorter.
I am happy to live with this, otherwise I am hoping that this will be a "bolt on" job.
Can anyone advise?
Thanks.
P.S. The seller does not have any images of the muffler he is selling, and I can't locate any images to make comparisons with, so I am taking a risk until I can get there to look, and it's a long drive, so I am trying to make sure it is worth the trip.
Bolting it on is no issue. From memory, the tip shouldn't be an issue as well. The Verada bumper, although being approx 5cm longer, curves in at the bottom as the tip is the same length as a Magna sports.

Straight through sports muffler will make a difference but not what you'd be hoping for. The AWDs are notorious for bogging down off idle due to superior traction & extra weight. The rear muffler will help more-so in the midrange to higher revs (at least that's the way it was on mine). The HM Perry headers with Y-pipe make more of the difference in low down torque.
It wasn't until I did the exhaust & then later on changed over to a 6g75 (with cut n shut 380 plenum, stock CAI) with 98RON ECU flash that the low down torque issue was largely resolved. It's not so much that the stock 6g74 motor lacks low down torque, it's just that it's hampered by the extra traction & 130ks of extra weight in AWD spec that bog it down off idle. No such issues with the FWD variants.

Had been wondering if the gtvi awd muffler would fit. Hmmm.... wonder if my father would notice if i swapped his for mine lol!
As I mentioned in another thread, it should fit without issues. As for whether you father will realise the difference depends on his hearing and eye sight. Lol.

I can see what you are saying now - second image down showing view from rear.
