Son has a TF Magna. The instrument lights are more often off than on. They will come on for periods and then fade out. it's not so much a flickering as if some gremlin has a voltage regulator that they are playing with, more like an fade in fade out until it disappears again totally for a lengthy period. He said he thought going over bumps had an effect on bringing them to life at times. Could it be something like a faulty relay?

Check connections on back of cluster.
Could possibly be a faulty dimmer ( the wheel that adjusts the brightness)

Thanks for that suggestion. Should have put this in the first post. The centre console light with the range etc also exhibits the same behaviour when the instrument lights malfunction. Is that also on the dimmer?

My brother has a similar issue on his TE. I have checked all connections and fuses, next step is to replace the cluster. Would be interesting to see how this pans out.

Ok, thanks. I'll drop it out on the weekend. He never stops mentioning it. First car and supposed to be perfect for $800! :) Pretty good value though, even given it's sun rash, hail scars and leaking rack. Drives like a dream on the open road.
