Newbie here - I read an article recently that said ALL mitsubishi autos should be fitted with an auto trans cooler - can anyone comment on this?

I know when i was looking at buying a legnum most of the auto models (the modded ones) had a trans cooler fitted...

My tj 2001 is tiptronic auto gear box no transmission cooler so I'm tempted to say they don't need one that said always a good idea especially if you are looking at putting more power thru it but having one won't do you any harm imo

Wouldn't botehr for your daily comute, as soon as you upgrade power or tow i'd do it though.

As hayden said not really needed on a daily drive especially if you're treating it nicely

If it was required for grandpa driving ( face it these cars are for grandpas) they would have done it from factory.

I'm sure thats not true unless your doing a lot of towing but the everyday car doesn't need one.

If you are a grandpa driver and don't hoon or tow, I don't think a transmission cooler is necessary.

I would definitely change your fluid more often then specified in the manual though. If you are indeed a grandpa driver, I would look at flushing your auto fluid every 40,000km or so with genuine Mitsubishi fluid.

The auto boxes on Magnas are a weak point which is why regular fluid changes and/or transmission coolers are often recommended.

Sorry totally disagree on all above comments. I get cars in with blown boxes owned by grandmas and young blokes, rarely do I get them in when a cooler has been fitted

The statement about all should have them is very true. Remember tr and ts had coolers and did not fry autos like third gens do

You don't think manufacturers make mistakes?!
Also the problems with the gearboxes took years to come to the surface. And Mitsubishi did respond to rectify the main issue (wave spring) in the TW gearboxes. So i'd be careful with trusting the manufacturer so much. The 10's of 1000's of people (including a very conservative grandpa I know with a GTVi) that have broken gearboxes should testify otherwise.

The 3rd gen magna's are known for gearbox failures - why would you risk it?! They're not cheap gearboxes, and unless you're willing to remove them yourself you will pay a lot of money to have it fixed and replaced if it fails.

External transmission coolers are pretty cheap at $150, easy to DIY install and could potentially save you over $1000 in having to get it replaced. If you wanted to rebuild a 4sp you'd be looking at around $1200-1500, not including labour to remove it from your car. 5sp auto's can be up to $2500-2800 plus labour again.

If you don't want your gearbox to die, it should be the no.1 mod on your list.

First thing i did when i bought my VRX was fit a tranny cooler despite the advice of the related threads on this.

From experience now, i can tell you the shifts are much smoother, quieter and feels a lot better with it.

For a couple of hundred fitted, i couldn't see an issue with fitting it and glad that i did.

I think people should just do it instead of opening a new thread on it, seems there are so many threads on this.

I've been thinking about getting this done for a while now but the major issue I have is finding someone in Perth that can supply and fit and will do a proper good job.

I know RPW can do it but from all the negative comments on here about them I'm not too keen.

So anyone know a good place in Perth to get this done properly, preferably NOR? Thanks
