Only time I had the rev gauge jump all over the place was when the ignition coil was failing.

im not getting any spark from the coil ive bought a new coil from sprints its exactly the same but the to bolt holes that are on the coil dont marry to the original bracket does it affect the coil and whats that othe thing o the bracket for that clips on to the wire ill post a pic

TR and TS came out with slightly different coil connectors and electrical values. Take your old one with you to a wreckers and compare. Grab the ignition module mounted on the bracket as well, I found out the expensive way that a dud coil can take out the ignition module, and a dud ignition module can take out the coil.
If the Sprint one isn't identical, take it back and ask for your money back.

Are you using the Sprint coil? It needs to be earthed.
Look inside the distributor plug, these tend to corrode. It's a 4 connector plug and socket on the side of the distributor with a rubber boot over it.
If that is ok, it could be the HAL sensor inside the distributor.

Optical chopper in distributor produces a low voltage signal to the ignition module, which interrupts primary current in the coil and causes the spark at the spark plug.
If the low voltage signals from the distributor don't reach the ignition module due to corroded plugs and sockets the coil won't fire.
