Hi everybody
I have a 1991 Mitsubishi Magna TR, 2.6 EFI 4 Cylinder, Automatic.
Yesterday my check engine light came on while driving and I revved the engine up by pressing the accelerator a couple of times and the check engine light went off, this happen twice within a 40 minute time span.
Prior to this I did notice my car had a slight jerking motion.
It’s had a tune up about 3 months ago, replaced spark plugs & leads, fuel filter, air filter, distributor cap & rotor.
It’s got 128000k’s on the clock, no overheating and no smoke from the exhaust.
What could this be?

Hi

The best way to find out exactly what it is, is to get the computer checked for fault codes as a sensor somewhere has detected something abnormal.
In the past I have just asked my Mitsubishi dealer if they can do a quick check and they didn't charge me for this (it could be different now, but definitely worth finding out the exact fault that has thrown the light up).
It could be something small. If the car ran fine whilst the light was on, it could just be the oxygen sensor. The car can still be driven if this is the case.
If there was a jerking with the light on it could be the throttle position sensor. Check that the connections are secure and clean.
If the light continues to come up, try disconnecting the battery for a while, this will clear the code. Reconnect it and go for a drive and see if it comes on again.

Hi,
Thanks for your reply Shamous69, I will call into our local Mitsubishi dealer on Thursday to see if they could check it for me.

Hi Everybody,
Well took the car to a mechanic and they ran a vehicle diagnostic test and a total of 6 sensor reported an error:
Code 001: 11: OXYGEN.SNSR
Code 002: 21: CLT TEMP.SNSR
Code 003: 22: CRANK A.SNSR
Code 004: 23: No.1 CYLINDER TDC.SNSR
Code 005: 24: SPEED.SNSR
Code 006: 31: KNOCK.SNSR
Mechanic said that it's very unusual for that many codes to appear and came to the conclusion that my distributor is at fault.
I've been driving my car since the check engine light came on. It starts up first shot. No check engine light so far but there is still a little jerking motion here and there, while driving.
What do you’s think?
Please refer to my first post above, Post #1
Cheers

That is quite a list of codes! Did they replace the distributor or just clear the codes?

The jerky problem: Maybe try running some injector cleaner to start with and some 98 octane fuel for a few tanks, if it persists have the injectors professionally cleaned.. certainly can't hurt.

Hi,
they just cleared the codes, but I replaced the old distributor with a new one and currently running on 98 octane with injector cleaner in the tank, pretty good so far.
I will still get the injectors cleaned thou, gosh I got a bleamin' fright at the price of 1 new injector $126.00 each. Oh well things we have to do to keep me on the road...lol

Good god, don't buy brand new injectors Mara. Take yourself down to Repco and ask for 'aznew' injectors, $136 it cost me, they're re-conditioned injectors. You will need to know how to remove your own when you go to pick up the replacement ones, as you have to take yours in (They're a swap over item) to avoid the $250 core deposit. But to make my point, I went to the sunshine coast and back for christmas and did 340kms half tank. My old girl has 248,000km on the clock, low-ish on compression (even over all 4) and a fairly tired autobox. Before I got the injectors, I managed only 250km. Not to mention a terrible idle quality and poor acceleration.

Usually about $100-ish, but DxDiag, you're better off getting reconditioned ones from repco for a few reasons. First of they use far better cleaning methods, they replace the seals/o-rings, replace the filter basket, repair or replace the needle etc. I got a set of four for $136 a few months ago from repco. They're a swap over item, you order the reco'd injectors, wait till they arrive, go to repco, open your bonnet, remove your own injectors, go in and swap them + pay some cash, go back outside and fit new ones. And you're off like a rocket again.

My injectors are healthy im not getting any lights i was just wondering because i have a feeling some thing is up with the fuel items because im getting quite shitty milage, i do have extractors but it should really increase the fuel effency not lower
