So my auto in my TH has started flaring a little (not too much) when it's hot or if i shift too much (i know i know...not designed for shifting...)
It isnt too bad, just a little slip usually between 3rd & 4th. Organized to get a trans flush at russels automatics (gold coast) & they said that the clutch could be worn & repairs could cost between $1200 & upto $3000 (unlikely to be the later because it was "no where near that bad at the moment")
I rang Magna Wreck & they said they could do a manual conversion fitted for $1650. Is that a decent enough price? I think so but I dont know much about that atm...OBVIOUSLY i'd rather go manual than stay auto & i do have the $$ for it. Anyone know somewhere else on the gold coast i could get the same done for less $$?

I still have to get the engine serviced - timing belt/water pump/etc/etc as it's at 211k so there's a bit to spend...I'm also just considering buying another car & selling this one.

Exploring all options atm - any advice/suggestions would be appreciated! :)

The flush might make a difference.
Ask about the condition of the old oil when they change it, if it is burnt it may help to put in a transmission cooler.

A tired trans flaring between shifts is easy to live with, just shift manually to fourth, preferably when you have reached cruising speed in third, while lifting up on the throttle to ease the strain on the clutch pack. Trans could be good for years yet. Of course, if you are used to hooning around, this may spoil all your fun.

They said the oil was quite bad - browny/yellow? Don't really want to spend over $300 getting it flushed if it wont fix it...A guy at a magna specialist said it has nothing to do with the clutches ("they never wear out" apparently...), & was the pump dying. For $1650 id rather go manual! :)

Ask if it is possible to check and adjust the line pressure on the auto box.

Lots of opinions exist to explain why an autobox acts up, but in the real world only a full strip down would find the problem.

Why not just drive the car until the box really dies, or the belt breaks? Or sell it and buy a younger car?

Personally, I'd do the flush and see from there.

you can do the flush by yourself, download the manuals on the forum, it will give you step by step info on how this is done

A flush could be beneficial, especially if it isn't "too bad" yet. I had a TF that flared a little between 3rd and 4th ever since 100,000km onwards and it now has 315,000km and it hasn't gotten any worse, just had flushes done every 45k or 90k.

I had the same problem about a year and a half ago – flaring between 3rd and 4th. I’d recommend getting your transmission flushed as a first step.

I took my car to Cricks Mitsubishi at Tweed Heads. A transmission flush and refill with genuine fluid only cost $158. The flaring issue was immediately fixed and changes in all gears were silky smooth once again. I haven’t had any issues with it since.

The price quoted for a manual conversion was about right, generally about $500 labour and fluids, $650 for a conversion kit and then a new clutch. Don't let any fool kid you into getting a used or cheap clutch fitted, for a proper good quality clutch you are looking in the area of $650

A full trans flush for $158?!? I was quoted $300+ for a full flush! $150 for the basic service...I'll have to give them a call in the morning!

But if i keep the car I'd rather just to a manual conversion...

Paranoid much?......

I was making a general statement to warn the op not to use a second hand clutch after all using a second hand clutch is simply false economy given the labour involved to change it again

Being the professional Mitsubishi specialist mechanic you are I know you would not fit a used clutch so was not aimed at you more than it was directed at the op should he get the place he mentioned to do a manual conversion as for the price quoted I suspect that is what they would use given that nearly half of the price quoted would be clutch alone so does not leave much for margin and paying overheads such as rent and wages and insurance
