Hi guys,

Today, I went to move the Magna, I reversed out of the driveway fine, shifted it into drive and got next to nothing in any of the forward gears. Shifted it again into reverse and it went into gear with a massive clunk. Shifted it into drive, it had enough momentum to get me into the driveway and nowhere else.

Checked it again a couple hours later, it still did the massive clunk into reverse. When shifting into drive it does go into gear but regardless of whether you have half or full throttle, the transmission output is approximately that of what it would be in gear at idle.
I checked the dipstick, which is still mostly a reddish colour with the tiniest specks of black.

From these symptoms, what could possible diagnoses be? My guess is wave spring, but could it also be something like a torque convertor or oil pump or something different altogether?

Wave spring does not make it clunk, my guess is coolant leakage on ecu and is in limp mode

If wave spring damages oil pump then car will not move at all

I hope its not that, the heater core, pipes, seals and hoses were replaced in August.
I had a quick feel around and it seems to be bone dry, lifted up the passenger footwell carpet, no dampness and no smell. The ECU still has the plastic cover on it which is dry and, from what I could feel, the ECU is dry also.

Up until very recently my gear selector lamps were working (except for 'D'), I went out before to check if the 'N' was flashing and there are no bulbs that are illuminating in the gear selector (everything else in the cluster works). Does this seem strange?

Check the fluid levels in the gearbox

Gearbox fluid levels are fine, and the fluid is still red as it was replaced in August.

Something that has come to mind, could this be related to the inhibitor switch? I find it strange that up until recently, all bar the 'D' shift indicators were working in the dash, and now none are. If I have researched correctly, the inhibitor switch operates these lamps, could a failed inhibitor switch also cause a harsh reverse shift and little to no drive when forward gears are selected?

Just while ur waiting for an answer to that from someone who knows, i have a similar issue in the KH where if the transmission wiring loom connector gets wet (after engine cleaning for example) the system behaves strangely with odd indicators on the dash and often locking into limp mode. Its necessary to undo the connector and blow out all the moisture which fixes it. I assume that wiring loom goes to the ECU.
The connector i mean is to the right of the tranny dipstick, down low.

That could be possible. How immediate were the symptoms after you washed down the engine? I washed down mine the weekend before last (9/12), but these symptoms didn't start until yesterday.

Have you checked the reverse light fuse? little light symbol with an R in it?

Rough clunk and it needed huge amounts of RPM to get it to move. Not drivable. Cannot remember about indicator lights. Wil go and pull the fuse and check!


EDIT: just pulled the fuse and yes no indicator lights. And same symptoms as yours. Hope that fixes it for you Daniel.

Symptoms are identical. I blew mine when I was wiring up my reverse lights. Didnt realise till I went to go out and had no power at all!

The fuse had blown due to the passenger side reverse lamp wiring rubbing on the body, exposing the wire itself.
Fixed up the wiring, replaced the fuse and everything is operating normally again.

Glad it's all sorted mate. Took me bloody ages to work it out with mine but I'm glad it's all sorted
