My 2004 tl has broken the triangler shaped box that sits on top of the air intake from the air filter to the fuel injection. I have just blocked the hole and the car seems to run fine. What purpose does this thing serve and will it harm my car without it?

Its just there to create space inside the intake to reduce induction noise.
