Good Evening Everyone,
Long time lurker first time poster!
I was pointed in this direction my MistahJT (A good friend of mine) and thought I would ask your thoughts on this Magna.
http://www.gumtree.com.au/s-ad/rooty-hill/cars-vans-utes/2001-mitsubishi-magna-sedan-sport/1010408618
I'm going to look at it tomorrow and if it works out well I should have it by this weekend (Need to get a loan).
What are your thoughts?
Cheers, Jacob.

Looks OK, do a revscheck (http://www.revscheck.com.au/?gclid=CImclOrjnrQCFeRMpgodOxUA2Q) for your own peace of mind.

Thanks Prowlwer,
What are your thoughts on the KMS? Is this average and how long do they normally go for?

Km doesn't sound too bad provided it has been serviced correctly. A well looked after engine will go twice that distance easily.
Get hold of the service records and see if the cam belt has been changed. You would be surprised how many Magna owners skip this one even though its a 100,000km/5 year requirement.
Check service records for regular oil changes, spark plug change at 100,000, is the clutch original or has it been replaced?
The car looks good, previous owner obviously was keen on the appearance side, but what about the service side? If there are no service records, assume the belt/plugs etc need doing and argue the price down by $1K.
Get under the car and check drive shaft boots and steering rack boots. Check clutch for slipping, likely to be close to worn out at that Km if it is the original. Should be able to chirp the front tyres on dry bitumen. lol

Thanks guys,
Yep that's me my old rusty ratty Corolla. It does the job but it's getting old and I'm considering giving it to my sister because her car is dying (worse than mine).
The clutch is original, I have only driven a manual car < a dozen times so I'm not entirely sure about the whole slipping thing. How can I tell easily without looking like a moron infront of the owner? The lady that answered the phone said that the clutch is in good condition and "soft" is this a good or bad sign?
Hahaha, MistahJT has been telling me all about how quick they are :P
My other option is a Commodore or Falcon but I think I might go with the Magna. It's less common and from my understanding has less issues.
Any other things i should look out for common to these cars?
I asked about fading paint, clutch condition, tint etc but didn't ask about service history. I'm going by tomorrow after work to have a look at it - I can drive manual pretty well but still not the best so it should be interesting.

paint is a little issue, but only if the car was never detailed
i have a tf and the average k's for a TF is 220,000+(last i checked), tj may be a bit lower but the k's seem okay for the cars age
just give it a general inspection
also if you get it, make sure you put two mcm stickers on it for the extra power lol

If i was to buy it it would have to go for at least 2 years with minimal problems. Most are 220 :O?
How long do they normally last?
HAHAHA, Will need a Rake Loves It sticker too!

If you look after it,it will last a long time
Many other people will echo this on the forum as there are magnas with 300,000+ on the odo
And join the club with the rake stickers!
Maybe be different and get a royal nasho or chopped haha lol

Pretty simple way to see if its slipping is get up to like 40km/h or something and put it in fifth. Start accelerating, and if your revs are picking up faster than your speed, the clutch is slipping. But if your revs grow slowly or in line with your speed then you are OK. Most standard magna clutches (from what I gather anyways) are pretty 'soft', meaning pedal feel is relatively easy and its easy to find the friction point.

They look great in that colour (sapphire blue from memory) looks very well cared for all over but as stated just check service history & get revs check & if all checks out then its a bargain. I knew someone with a KJ Verada that owned it from new, had 300000kms on it & the engine was smooth, quiet & perfect in every way, It was very well looked after mechanicaly from new.

Am i going to look like a dick doing this with the owner in the car? :P
I will probably get it done at 200k when it's due if i get the car.

I really like the colour too! I think it would look great with some nice black wheels with chrome lips.
Good to know that they go strong for so long! It will be my prized possession! I do a lot of work on my current car however, i would prefer not to do EVERYTHING to this one if i get it. I can afford to pay a mechanic for the majors and other stuff.

had a few, but only because for the first 98,000 km it was roughly treated by the mechanics and never driven.the block was on its way out and corroded when i owned it
but you have the 3.5 so you shouldnt have this problem, i have a 3L however
and that colour looks awesome when clean, and there are lots of factory items to add as mods :D

Hopefully it has a great service history. Why do the 3l corode and not the 3.5?
Anything ele before I go to look at this tonight guys?

Why would you look like a dick haha, just tell them, 'I'm just trying to see the fuel economy' or something, or just tell them you're checking to see if the clutch slips!

Alright I took it for a drive and gave it a THOROUGH look over.
It all looked good - The log books were fine until i got to 100,000kms where the TB/WP was due and it was not marked or stamped. I asked the guy and he assured me it was done at 100,000.
He told me he was a mechanic yadda yadda yadda. I asked him not very technical questions and he seemed stumped like i asked him what the answer to life is. Rocker gaskets/covers had black soot and slight seepage of oil asked about that and he said it was done at 100,000 as well.
I then asked if i could take it for a drive, he handed me the keys and said off you go. My response, what you trust me to go by myself? He said "Its worth more stolen than if i sell it" HAHAHAHAHA!
Took it out and it drove great, clutch felt great but i found it a bit hard to get the gears in the right position it was roughish even tho I had my foot all the way depressed in the clutch pedal. Not tooo much of a problem. Did the 5th gear test and it was fine no slipping.
When i stopped again, i noticed a rattling noise, went back to the house and it was pretty damn loud then, I took a look around and i saw a big puddle of oil at the back of the engine and on the PS rack by the looks of it. Thats when i decided it's not worth the hassle and walked away. I told the guy what i thought and found and he said he will take it to get fixed. I then said your wife has my number, call me when you get it fixed and I'll have a look.
My friend also pointed out to me that the back bumper was pushed in and near the number plate had two 1"x1" dents in it.
I'm glad I walked away.
Edit: With all that being said, I will keep an eye out for manual magnas as this thing was QUICK and very nice to drive.
