Hi Guys,

I have a "date" to check-out a TW over the weekend; owner is genuinely going O/S and is keen to sell. It has factory LPG fitted with 48 Litre donut tank. What sort of consumption could I expect on gas?

48l tank? that'll go for about 10 minutes between fills. I have a TW wagon with Impco factory gas and I fill about every 220k. Consumption is 18-19l/100km. Good luck with it: the TW is a nice car, and is better stil (IMO) with AWD or 380 brakes.

19l per 100- Wow....
User RUSH had an issue with the 18-19 lp100- replaced his computer and its a 14-15 now...

Many people here get in between 12-18 lp 100 mixed.. Though I think some of the 12's are more country/freeway than city than they would have you beleive... But 10's on the Freeway are possible, especially with the 4 speed....

I'd take it for a drive with a full tank for 100 k's.. And fill it...

I've taken it to 4 or 5 gas specialists over the years, inc. the people in Adelaide who fitted all the factory gas for MMAL, complaining that I think it's way too thirsty, they all say it's just what they get. The last crowd played around with the diaphragm (I think in the mixer) and achieved an improvement from about 19.5 to about 18.5. Driven slowly and carefully in the country it gets about 13, compared to about 8 on petrol. On petrol it'll get about 12-12.5 round town.

should be at the same temperature: a hot gas tank and a cold one don't take the same amount of gas, I think

:woot: Hey - I guess its always gonna be a trade off, do you go gas or no gas, then have space or no space due to the cylinder? We need the TW wagon's room because of our dogs, so the donut tank is great; but then of course it sits where the spare should sit. If we put the spare in with the dogs we run the risk of JAWS attacking the tyre, so around (our small country) town we would run spare-less and only carry it for country trips.

IF you're getting 18-19L/100km on a dedicated lpg magna then you have a problem.

I've got an aftermarket system that's tuned for performance, and I push my sedan a bit, and she barely ticks over 16L/100km. A factory tuned and installed system should use way less.

Firstly get the system overhauled - including the vapouriser diaphram to be fully cleaned out, the mixtures readjusted and retuned (if you have a closed loop system). Then replace the spark plugs and leads and see how you go. Make sure obviously that your air filter is clean and check out the mixer to ensure it's not filled with gunk. A upper intake plenum clean wouldn't go astray either.

I get about around 16's out of my wagon and it's in desperate need of a service.

Mind you I tend to think at times the LPG is quicker burning or something as occasionally I struggle to stay out of the 20's.

Yep that's exactly right SH00T.

Problem I was facing was my processor lights wouldn't flicker between lean/rich at all so car was running extremely rich. Got a new processor off a relatively newly fitted system from a wrecker (Much cheaper than brand new) and sure enough with some minor tweaks to the mixtures and voila back to running how it should. Currently sitting on 14.68l/100km

The problem I had was when the system was fitted my plugs, leads, an o2 sensor were all 200,000km old and were stuffed. Then had LPG fitted and then recently got around to replacing these things which prompted the problem. As was suggested by another member, the system must have been installed and tuned to compensate for worn parts, replacing them meant it would over compensate.

Hope this helps

My system gets around 19-20Lper 100km on my KF Xi (With climate control on, 100% city).. On the highway it gets around 10L per hundred now.

I have a 3L TF manual sedan with an Impco mixer. We regularly get better than 11 L/100 km from it on gas - mostly at 100+ km/hr, although it doesn't seem to matter is we drive at only 80 - it still gives about the same. If we go on a really long run with no stopping, we can get consumption down to 10L/100 km, but this is not normal.

Thanks to all who replied with consumption figures for LPG. Out here in SW Victoria LPG varies from about 76 - 82 cpl. I've done some calculations and it's almost NOT worthwhile having the conversion based on those numbers and petrol at about $1.38 at present.

So - it can help me in negotiations with this purchase - and I'll be less disappointed if the "little old lady" won't come to the party on price. Mind you it does look to be a solid performer with good service histories; simply put - the gas won't be the determining factor!

Cheers

it's a duel fuel system. I've taken it to the people who did the original factory fit. They couldn't fault it. Still ridiculously thirsty. About 2 yrs later I took it somewhere else: they said the computer is fine but worked extensively on the mixer. Slight improvement. Still v thirsty.

if you can recommend a gas place in Adelaide, please do. I would love to use less gas.

The factory fitted dedicated gas (no petrol system fitted) TW sedan I had would use approx 9-9.5 ltrs per 100km on the highway cycle & approx 12ltrs per 100 km on the city cycle. The wife's factory dedicated gas TJ sedan achieves similar results.
