View Full Version : Setting Tank to empty

For a few years now the digital readout that tells you how much petrol you've got left has been incorrect. It will say that I've still got 60 or 70 km of petrol left when the tank is virtually empty, what's the fix for this?

How do you know the tank is virtually empty? Just the fuel gauge? It's meant to sit on empty when you in fact have petrol left in there. Trust the digital readout, not the fuel gauge needle. The digital readout cuts out as soon as the low fuel warning light comes on anyway.
The "fix" is to fill up when the gauge gets to about 1/4, really. Running the tank to near dry is not good for the fuel pump in the tank. LOL
I fill up when the digital readout gets down to 100, that's about 10L left in the tank.

Yeah I'm going by the fuel gauge. It's just that I've noticed over the years that the discrepancy between the fuel gauge and the digital readout seems to have increased. I swear that when we first got the car the 2 indicators were better aligned.

Sender units tend to fail over time, a common occurance in 3rd gens.

When your fuel light comes on your dig readout should read around 100km till empty /10 litres left give or take.

Mine comes on at about 50km, or when it flashes the three dashes.
The sender in mine is about 10 months old.

I cant figure mine out i have 200+ kms left by the digital readout then cuts out when low fuel warning pops up. i'm not game to test the 200kms out just yet.
How would you fix this?

You can't fix it. Just leave a Jerry can in the boot and drive casually until you run out. Also ignore the myth about the shit fuel at the end, it all gets mixed up as you drive and the fuel is taken from the bottom of the tank

Have you tried resetting the trip computer?

Get the computer to recalculate the distance to empty. With that showing on the display, press and hold down the big button, and it will beep and recalculate the distance to empty.

I'm on my second fuel sender and I've always had around 15L left in the tank when the fuel light comes on

Sounds about right. Set to be very "safe", Mitsu doesn't want a million complaints from people who ran out of gasoline. LO

I'll add my 2cents here,
When I got my TW the Empty light would come on with only 50L used. I used to be really stumped by this but found out how to fix the issue.
It is a problem with the ECU. Keep filling it up at only 50L used and the Empty light will come on at 50L. Same goes for estimated range. It will estimate on 50L not the 72L. Really dodgy. :)
So how to fix?
Well it's a slowish process. The sedans have a 72L tank. So look at the digital read out. Keep driving and driving till about 68L used. (I'm not brave enough to push further lol) Then you fill up a full tank, not three quarters or half etc.. It has to be a full tank. Do this about 3 -4 times and it will fix itself. You'll find the warning light will come on later and later. Plus you'll have a big smile on your face seeing your driving range has a substantial increase. :)
