View Full Version : Start up issue
So this morning I went to start my car, it wouldnt start. It cranked over perfectly fine, but it seems it wasn't getting fuel.
When I disconnected the fuel line from the fuel pump and then reconnected it, it ran first start-up (and it keeps running). On the second and third start-up it will run for a second or two, and then stop. Then after that it will just crank but not run.
Ive tried disconnecting/reconnecting the battery and fuel pump wiring.
Ive swapped the fuel pump back to stock. (fuel pump it working fine)

Plenty of fuel? The fuel sending unit is not sending a faulty reading?
Have you done any electrical work to the car recently?
Yes plenty of fuel, havent had any electrical work done to it recently. How could I check if it sending a faulty reading?

The only way I have found out in the past it that my old car ran out of fuel when the gauge was still showing 1/4 of a tank, so if you are sure there is fuel in the tank then that can't be the issue.
So you would obviously have spark? Can you test the injectors for a pulse?
I checked out the fuel tank when I changed my fuel pump over, pump is sitting in fuel.
Yeah got spark and injectors are fine, as the engine will start and run the first time.

So the car will start then stall? and wont fire if you try to restart it?
If you turn the key to off then try starting the car again does the same thing happen?
People will say that its your battery on its last legs as that when the ECU picks up a voltage drop it cuts the engine to avoid damage to the ECU
But it can also be the coil around the ignition barrel (this is what picks up the chip inside the key and disables the immobliser), this was the problem in my car after everyone told me it was my battery
Ill show what i do.
1. Disconnect battery, fuel pump wiring, fuel line to pump.
2. Reconnect all
3. Start car, car will start and run like normal. Turn off car
4. Start car, starts then stalls. Turn off car x2
5. Start car, wont start at all only cranks over
6. Repeat from 1.
****The fuel line has to be disconnected and reconnected to get it to start again****
Yeah my battery is only a couple months old (Optima YellowTop), so i can rule that out.
I was thinking it was something to do with the immobilizer, but im not sure why I can get it to run by disconnecting/reconnecting the fuel line though

What model
TL LS Sedan, 4spd Auto.
Ill try out my spare key tommorow just incase the chip in the key is busted.
Tried my spare key out, on the first go it ran fine, second go it cutout, third is ran, fourth it cut out.
After that it seems to be starting every-time even with my main key.
Could this be the immobilizer playing up?
Confirmed this problem is to do with the immobilizer playing up,
last night had to get the RAA out, was able to get it reset it by taking out the 20A fuse under the steering wheel and putting it back in.
Anyone know of a good auto-electrician in the north east burbs?

I came across this http://martybugs.net/articles/magna-stall.cgi when I was searching for information relating to my own Magna woes. Looks like you could fix it yourself...
Could be an immobiliser issue - similar issue with me when the idiot who was cutting my new key used the wrong chip. Car started up for a second or two then died. How to fix it I can't help. Only method I know of is new ECU/BEM/Keys and ignition and door lock barrels.
Thanks guys,
I found that article earlier while digging around the forums, did what it said, car seems to be working fine now

Check if you're AFM plug is securely in, maybe blocked fuel filter also?
Also is the car cutting out in idle, or when you try drive it?
Maybe you're idle is too low, you can increase the idle rpm and try as well.
