I'm about to go outside and have a look at my front passenger brakes/bearings.
They have been squeaking whilst driving (more so with heavy passenger)
and shudder on braking.
I can check the thickness but not the runout. I don't have a dial guage.
I also need to look at the rear drums.
Does anyone know what the tolerance in the diameter of the drum is?
BTW....Magna TH
So I'm looking for a mechanic who can machine the parts if necessary and be honest.
Rather than trying to make me bring in the whole car so that they can do all the work.
Ultimately if I can't figure out the problem, to be able to go to them for an honest answer,
even if that meant me then going off and fixing the problem myself.
Somewhere around Keilor, Sunshine, St Albans....
Cheers

You will find you will have discs on the back, not drums

A helpful answer lol
Any brake shop can measure and skim discs if you walk in with them quite cheaply.
Make sure you use a torque wrench to do up the wheel nuts to 95 Nm. I have a feeling that uneven or over tightening them can distort the brake disc.
If that doesn't fix the problem, look for other things that show up when braking, bad wheel alignment, wheel balance or excessive wear in front suspension components like the tie rods, tie rod ends, ball joints.

The rear has a disk for the main brakes and a drum in the middle for the hand brake.
I flipped it round and spun it with a texta mounted on a brick touching it, and I could see that
there was uneven contact. Although Im not 100% if flipping it around seated it properly for the test.
A micrometer on the front disk showed no uneven wear. The texta test once again sowed uneven movement (Runout). I tried moving the disk one bolt along, as I read that that should overcome
and damage to the hub facia, but the same. So it looks like wheel bearings.

I've bought my brake parts from Brakewest in McIntyre road Sunshine. The have carried and sold me QFM pads (road and track pads), RDA disk rotors (standard, slotted, and gold/slotted/dimpled) as well as that they've machined disks for me and rebuilt callipers for me for Mazda RX7, Merc 450SE and Merc 280SE 3.5
Previously they didn't didn't do work on peoples cars (and that suited me since I do all my own work) but I think that's changed lately and they now do brake work on people's cars.
I can't speak for their labour costs or workmanship at this stage, but their parts prices and ordering times were very good. I am not affiliated with Brakewest in any way other than that they are 1.2km from me so they are my local brake place.

Check that the squeak is not one of the low pad warning metal tangs on the pads, if fitted. A number of pad brands use these to tell you the pads are low. Often they will only be on one of the four pads.
Also, nowadays it's not much more to buy new disc rotors than have the old ones machined.
