Hi Guys,
I may have located an 05 Wagon in Victoria that kinda fits our requirements. But the last service on it was done at 67,000 Km and it has since done another 20,000 - I know that that is WAY too far apart.
My question is - can someone tell me the suggested pattern of Mitsy recommended services from the book, up to 100,000 from say 60,000 please?

IIRC Mitsubishi recommend the oil and filter every 7500k's and most other things fall under the 15000k intervals so by those standards the oil may need a good flush (Liquid Moly make a nice one) and a quality oil (Penrite HPR10), then perhaps give it a good look over the front bank spark plugs can be getting on but should still have some life on them, check the air filter, fluid levels and she should be all sweet.
If you do have a look at it, I know its hard because its interstate check the master cylinder for leaking from the bottom, also looking at the chassis underneath the master cylinder, if its rusty or the paint is missing it means its leaking at they have just covered it up, have a look into the oil cap hole and inspect the condition of the rocker arms, something with under 100,000k's should look like the picture below, if not oil has been neglected. Have a look at the drivers side engine mount for cracking or if its split right through, make sure you full lock the wheels while moving, this will help you check the CV joints. Also check the power steering fluid and look underneath a car because if the steering rack is leaking then its about $800 for fitting a reco one. Those are the basic things to look at and are very good bargaining chips for the price if you find any issues.

Actually 15,000 km or 12 months for the oil change.
Most normal people would do it more often. lol 20,000 km is . . . . just silly. If it has synthetic oil in it, and it's less that 12 months old, should be ok.
Following is from glovebox owner's service manual I got with my '04 TL wagon.
There is a second page if you are interested.

It does state in the book in sever conditions 7500k's is recommended as opposed to the 15000k's, I dont know what they call sever but city driving certainly isnt any good.

Yes, "severe" conditions means you halve the numbers ie 7,500 km or 6 months. I think doing nothing but short trips around town of less than 10 Km are classed as "severe".

Thanks peaandham - actually this one is in Vic, so that makes things a bit easier. I'll take your advice on-board. Who would think it would be this hard to buy a car! :tired:
For example - I messaged a dealer in SA (I can hop onto a small carrier airline and get there easier than any other state) - he rang back and told me that though they had had the car on the yard for 6-7 weeks; they had only just sold it 20 mins prior! :kb:
I'm waiting on the owner of this private one to send me some pics; if I like what I see I'll go and look ASAP to avoid more disappointment. Then at least I can place a deposit if the car is a good 'un!

Thanks Mad - no that page gives me all I need, cheers. So they've skipped a service - or at least done an oil change themselves (hope its the latter).

Trying to save a new thread. Looking into the service schedule - how important is it to change the rear axle oil for a FWD magna? I am not sure if it was changed when my car had a 90k service. thanks

A 7 y/o car that's done less than 10,000kms per year .... if these kms can be verified what the frog are you waiting for, go and get it!
In My Opinion for what it's worth you are making buying the car harder than it needs be and unless the seller has the patience of a saint you run the risk of the seller telling you to POQ.
I once bought a Range Rover from a friend. It had been serviced regularly every 10000 km. Except that it took about 2 years to get to 10000 km. I had occasion to strip the engine and the oilways to the valve rocker gearwere almost totally blocked with baked on orange gunk. All the 10000 km;s had been short runs. It didn't take long for me to get it all cleaned out and a few years later, I blew a head gasket and removed a head. It was spotless - I changed the oil every 5000 km. I do this on our current cars every 7500 km and the top of the Magna head is very clean. Short runs are hell on any engine.

Hi Prowler,
OK, there's that - but you need to be aware that I'm 3-4 hours out of Melbourne (depending on their location) - so it's a HUGE effort to go see.
I'm trying to do as much of the work here - before spending what amounts to a working day behind the wheel, only to be disappointed!
To give you an example, some pictures arrived by email this morning that showed some fairly significant rear bumper damage, that had conveniently not been mentioned before.
I'm fairly sure that most on here would agree that you should be cautious; there's nothing worse than finding out you were scammed 1 month down the track?

Scamming needs to be watched out for.
However, expecting too much from a second hand Magna price wise and condition wise is going to lead to disappointment.
A pristine, low km Magna will be an owner's pride and joy, representing some input of effort and money to keep it that way, and is not likely to be up for sale.
You have to come to some sort of compromise between age, condition, Km, the list of things that may/will need fixing after you buy it, and price.
If you want a car that is perfect, be prepared to pay for it.
Buying new is one option that a lot of people go for. (Hyundai i30 looks nice.)

Finding the rear axle on a FWD Magna to change the oil could be quite a challenge, seeing it doesn't have one. To answer your question though, the answer is, it NEVER needs to be changed.
(Either you are joking or you are reading the service schedule wrong. lol)

A new car is out - insufficient funds - and IMO buying new is foolish anyway, since cars depreciate so quick. You might just as well light your cash and toss chunks of it away!
I'm not as fussy as you appear to think Mad; in fact I will accept some minor panel damage etc. I just want good mechanicals - as good as we CAN get for our limited $$$.
I'll post some pictures later of the rear bumper and try and get some price estimates off the esteemed and collective wisdom on-board this forum.

Just be patient. I spent 6 months thinking/searching for a replacement for my 18 year old TS wagon. When the right car becomes available all the lights inside your head will turn green and you will be in no doubt about forking out the money.

Anyone have an idea of price - I assume these come "naked" and get painted up - or else bought from a wreckers - or maybe off here?

That's not too bad, I know how easy it is to back into a "hidden" low level pole or large rock that is out of view as one reverses.
I'm in the Northern burbs if you want someone to have a laymans(not a mechanic) look at it.

Honestly I would have a car with 200 k on it from long trips with regular services before I would ever have a car with 80k on it from short trips which has only ever been serviced every 2 or 3 years
I see this all the time especially with elderly customers, they drive a short trip once a week, do 15k over 2 years, you lift off the oil filler cap and you can barely see the rocker gear for build up and sludge.
Be very wary if low mileage not because of it being legit, be careful because maintenance may be lacking.

Thanks prowler - I'm in the far SW of the state, so was just hopeful of getting an estimate of $$$?

Anyone at all have an idea of price? I would have thought someone here might have an idea what I'd be up for?
