Over the last couple of spare weekends i stripped the 4G54 had the head skimmed to be sure it was true and installed new piston rings and big end bearings.
Main reason for work on the motor was to replace worn cam chain and sprockets and remove the balance shafts and install the balance shaft elimination kit. Rings and bearings was only a little more work and may as well do it while you are there for the small cost in parts even though engine had done only 160k.
Lower balance shaft will come out with the oil pump with engine tilted down like you have to do to get the front pulley off.
The upper will not but by pulling it out as far as you can with engine tilted in the opposite direction (upwards) a bit you get the end of the shaft to sit just above the chassis rail and then with angle grinder and cutting wheel you can chop it in half and remove the other half easily. Just make sure you cover the engine up at that end leaving only the balance shaft exposed to prevent metal cuttings from getting into the motor.

Then just a matter of knocking in the stainless blank to stop oil flow that comes with the kit with a small hammer and drift into the upper balance shaft hole.

Pic shows difference in covers. Mostly bottom right were the adjuster is there is a small alloy area removed.

Engine is back together and running sweetly.
This is what was in the sump!! Lack of more regular oil changes with short trips by previous owner.
Luckily no damage done!!
