View Full Version : ATF genuine mitsu sp 3
Long story short, the wave spring in my Verada's (KL Sept 2003) gave up and I ended up getting a mechanic to repair the transmission.
In terms of ATF he has put in some Mitsu SP3 "compatible" ATF instead of genuine mitsu sp3 ATF once he completed the repair. He is confident that the ATF that he put in is as good as mitsu stuff (he is saying mitsu does not manufacture the ATF; they get it from bigger manufacturer and label it as mitsu). Though I am not really convinced on that explanation as I get bit of flaring (not always though) and sometimes I find it sitting on 4th gear where I would expect it to be on 5th by then (it eventually gets to 5th though. Just takes bit longer, that's all).
Two available options for me is to drain the ATF and put in some genuine stuff in (I am not sure if I can do the proper flush on my own, don't have the tools/experience) or get mitsubishi to do a power flush (too expensive).
If I were in Melbourne, I could get MadMagna to have a look but I am in Sydney.
Any thoughts suggestion?
Thanks in advance.

My Magna is using a SP-III compatible oil by Hi-Tec without issue. What fluid exactly was used?
If you've recently disconnected the battery (or if the mechanic disconnected it at some point), some flaring and harsh shifting can be expected until the transmission relearn procedure is undertaken (or it will relearn itself eventually)

I used Castrol for Mitsubishi and Hyuandai cars in mine with no problems. I ran out the genuine stuff when doing a flush so had to get some from Repco as the dealer was closed.
If it is a generic fluid then I'd be worried.
Thanks for your input guys.
I would not know what he exactly used. But it would not be generic. The mechanic was telling me its dexron, the same type that mitsu uses.
The mechanic did disconnect the battery. I got the tranny serviced in October. So, that was 3 months back. I would think that it would relearn what ever its needs to learn by now.
Madmagna suggested that I may flush the ATF to be sure.
I am confident that in terms of parts and fittings stuff the mechanic did a good job. So I started to think around ATF as I hear some people having issue for not using the right ATF.
Another symptom that I am seeing is, in highway when I am putting pressure back in the accelerator I feel some lagging in transferring the power and bit of jerk when the power finally transfers. But this could be a whole different issue.
Cheers.

Ok, Dextron is NOT what mits use, should not even be carried in a bottle in the boot of a Mits so the mechanic is either talking through his ass or is too stupid to look up the correct fluid.
CHANGE IT NOW< dont leave it in there if you want your clutch packs to stay in the box :)
Give it a proper flush, not just a drain and refill and use some proper SPIII fluid, not a Dextron mix with some "special" additive in it to make it think it is SPIII
The symptoms you describe especially the last one sounds like either the torque converter or a trans issue, after a proper flush and letting it settle see if it changes at all

A mech wanted to use Nulon "MULTI-VEHICLE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION FLUID" in mine... Any opinions on this stuff? (KF)
Thanks MadMagna.
I will get it flushed then. Do you know any one in Sydney who knows what they are saying/doing (apart from the mitsu dealer, they will charge me $280.00 for flushing)
