View Full Version : Something weird going on with a fog light?

Hey all,

Noticed my drivers side fog light seems to have a weird light spread. I've always known that it wasn't aligned right, figured I'd get it matching passenger side, went out to a dark parking lot facing a wall to adjust it and discovered that no matter how high or low I adjust it (Using the screw rod on the right hand side of it) the light beam is always really broad and would most definitely be a distraction to other road users, as it shines right in my eyes when I am standing a good ten metres away from the car. (Don't worry, I am aware it is illegal and don't use these for show off daily driving. :P)

The passenger side one has a visible cut off line below the level of my headlights as expected, but the driver's one has no cutoff line, and projects a broad beam of light well above the headlights even when adjusted as low as possible. Are there any other adjustments I can make or things I can check other than making sure the globe is seated? Which it is.

try swapping the globes over, as there may be a fault with the globe itself (ie bulb/filament alignment)
if that doesnt bring anything to light (no pun intended) then compare the reflective surfaces of the two to make sure there isnt ant faults there.

the following only applies to plastic lights:
does the outside clear cover show signs of sun damage and crazing (fine cracking visible on an angle), this has been something that ive noticed a lot when using the focusing machine on cars with polycarbonate lights, the cracks throw the light around.

Try to adjust the fog light with the adjuster and make sure the reflector is moving up and down. I did have the same problem with one of my TF ones and it turned out that it had been over adjusted and the adjuster had been unscrewed off the reflector and for some reason making it shine upwards. Also make sure it isnt the globe as suggested and that the light is fitted correctly and the brackets are not bent

both of my fog lights have a much wider spread, but don't light up anything in the distance. it's all more or less just light on the road. i figured it was just how they were meant to be.

yes it is how they are suppose to be wide shallow spread light angled towards the ground so it throws the light under the fog and it reduces the throw back or glare back at the driver making it easier to light the road markings and sides during fog/foul weather. These are not spot or driving lights

Damn. Least I'm not alone.

Yeah thanks, unfortunately the reflector most definitely is moving. Haven't checked globe yet, light is definitely fitted correctly and brackets not bent.

That is correct, however, one of mine as stated blasts light way out and up at eye level. As tania mentions in the most recent post, they are not supposed to put any light above the level of the headlight as it would make them irrelevant, but one of mine throws a wide beam really high, as though it is adjusted very high but it isn't.

I've actually scored a more or less free set of fog lights anyway so maybe I'll just replace the whole assy :P

Generally caused when globe is not seated correctly
