View Full Version : The wave spring grief.
So on the 28.12.12 the spring snaped on the way home from work. I had no credit on my phone so i walked about 3klm in the heat. then the mrs called me about 1klm fom home.
I went to the wreckers paid for a box $300 then i said these are for 2nd gen.
I had paid EFTPOS he could't refun by EFTPOS then he had to write me a check for the money WTF.
I got a box for $150 and put it in. all up it took me 11 hours on my own in the driveway in full sun 30+ deg. taking it out was the learning stage puting it back in was a bit easier. only lost a split pin for the left wheel. so for under $300 that includes trans cooler (yet to be fitted) and fluid.
Out of ten this is a eight for a novice.
I really miss my work shop it had a hoist.
If you need any hints just ask someone else.:tired:

Took me about 5 hours to remove/refit an auto box. Pain in the arse that was, but congrats on the successful swap. I assume everything is as it should be now?
Yes this box is smoother than the old one. but now im freaking its going to happen again. If the wife could drive manual i would have swapped for a five speed..

So I assume you have dismantled the old box and confirmed was wave spring
What would the parts to rebuild the damaged trans cost eg: pump and updated wave spring ifanyone know's
TIA.
No Mal i just assumed it was as the seaches on here pointed to this as the culprit. I had lost all forward gears but when i drained the fluid i found no bit of metal at all. and none on the sump plug.

So it wasnt wave spring failure then lol

So you had an oil pump failure most likely caused bt a bearing failure again caused from poor service history most likely long before you even got the car
Wave springs should sue for defamation lol. So often blamed and so rarely the cause. A broken spring will generally show nil symptoms until the bits cut through the filter and hit the oil pump

Only a rebuilder will be able to tell you once he pulls it down, assesses the damage and prices both the parts and his labour. Every gearbox will need different bits so don't go by what others have paid. Fairly obvious really.
I don't see the sense of spending 11 hours changing the gearbox to a $150 one with 180 odd thousand km on it, chances are it's not a long term fix.
And I agree with Mal, just because 100 people here agree wave springs can break, doesn't mean that's the cause of all failures in real life. I bet none of them have ever torn down a Magna autobox! (Neither have I, to be honest. lol)
Yeah i agree with Mal and Max, just at the moment im not in a position to get another car or pay anyone to fix this car. The fluid that came out of the new box was cherry red and the guy i got it from looked after his car.
I was wanting to try and rebuild it myself and i know that the pump is not easy to align up.

I should say there was no inication of any problems with the box, not even a sign just when it reved high with the cruise on then nothing. so this is why i blamed the wave spring and the fact i was reading about it days before. Therefore i blame me thinking about it, well kind of hoping that it would not happen to me.

I hear what you are saying. The way you did things is probably the cheapest way to keep the car on the road.
RE: Rebuild. Find a auto box rebuilder and ask for a quote for a strip down and assessment, be prepared for the strip down cost though.
If it is the oil pump and/or planetary gear set, the cost of rebuilding will be high just due to the parts involved, probably not worth the rebuild costs, but you will never know until somebody opens it up.
(If you open it up yourself, first check with a rebuilder if he is prepared to do the rebuild if you bring him the box in bits.)
Will do Max. thanks for all the replies, this is why i like this forum so much help.
