Hey guys,
Got a bit of a problem. My TJ Magna only has one key. I purchased a new blank key from Mitsubishi and took it to a locksmith to get cut and coded.
I waited about 20 minutes and they came out and said that they need the key number to program it.
I read in the owners manual that there should be 3 keys an one of them will have a plate with the key number on it.
Problem is that I have no way of contacting the original owner to ask if he has the keys or key number.
Is there another way of getting it? Unless I wait until the car is registered and take it to a Mitsubishi dealer to get coded, but it probably won't be cheap.
Cheers,
Ben

As far as I know it's off to the dealer ..... the only way.

this has me a little curious now. i've only got the one key for mine and wouldn't mind having a spare in case someone knocked off my keys/wallet. if you do end up going to a dealer to try and get another one and/or the key number, be sure to tell us how much it was.

Usually the key code refers to the cut of the key. The key then needs to be programed with a mutII to the car to make it work. The code on the tag will not assist
The proper way is to give the dealer your vin and the key comes pre cut and then gets programed

Hey guys,
I read in the owners manual that there should be 3 keys an one of them will have a plate with the key number on it.
Yes, when the car was new there were two master keys, one valet key, and 2 remotes.
Been through the process - buy key from dealer, locksmith to cut the key, back to the dealer to get it coded. $130 all up, but that was years ago.
Locksmith charged a lot as he guaranteed he would replace a chipped key if he stuffed it up. Some locksmiths can read the chip on a current key and code the new key the same, apparently.

Yeah I should have asked if they wanted the vin number so they could have had it cut and coded already.
I have a scan tool at home that I just tried, it has the option of registering the key, but it asks for a 4 digit number/password. I thought that the 4 digit number might have been the number on the tag that would have been with one of the keys.
It's strange though because I got a spare key from the same place that I got this key cut for my TF, and they cut and coded it with no problem, maybe the TJ is different in some way.
You could try this method.
I don't know if this works.

The code is not the one with the key, it is like pin code in the ecu, sorry but I can't put this up on a public forum.
Rob, that is remote programming
Max, why get a ket, get it cut, take it back to programme when your dealer can supply it already cut

Thanks Mal, it's ok don't post anything that could make anyone find out how to steal one of our cars, I might even go to Mitsubishi and quote the vin and ask if they could give me the pin. Or when I get the car registered I will just take it there. Just not sure how much they charge because the locksmith was going to charge $20 to cut the key plus $50 to code it, until they found out they couldn't.
Also thanks rob because I have ordered a new remote as well and I will need that info to program it. The remote I have for the car now only works 20% of the time, battery probably isn't the best but I will keep one as a spare anyway.
On the subject of keys, I was (rare occasion) in teh service dept of the local Mits dealer. A Mirage was brought in on a flat top truck. It turns out it was Mummy's car and the lad had it at Perisher Skiing. He lost the keys. Called NRMA and they broke in and winched it up onto the truck. The dealer had to phone Mummy to get her permission to get a new key cut. The local locksmith cut the key and then they had to program it to the car. Cost so far was about $600, and this was 10 years ago. Then, to top it off, they had to get Mummy's spare keys programmed in Sydney as well.
I learned from that experience, and went and got a new key cut, but not programmed into the car. This is wired under the car. The original valet key (every lock except the glovebox) is wired inside the car, so that should I lose the keys, I can get into the car without damage and get the operable key to get home. SHould anyone find the key under the car, it will get them in, but no further because it won't start the car.
Touch wood I haven't had to use the spare key, so it must be working well.

All I am going to say is that I found out what the 4 digit password is, entered it on my scan tool and it programmed the new key, but it also erased all other keys, so I had to reprogram the original key.
Good thing about that is the previous owner can't come over and steal it. He will be able to get in, but not disable the immobiliser.
I also programmed the new remote, which also erased the other remotes, so I also programmed the original remote as well.
All good now and I saved myself $50+

I thought I was going to have problems too, but I spoke to a decent locksmith here on the coast and was informed that they could do all the recoding etc on site.
I needed a new one as the original key that came with my car was all broken up the top so I went to said locksmith and they read the original key, cut the new one and reprogrammed it to the car using their plug in computer thingy. (Scan tool I guess) :P
They even provided me with the key code so if I ever need to get any cut again I can use that number.
All up it only cost me $99 for the key, cut and recode which I think it a really good price.
