Hi there,

I recently had my auto worked on and for reason the radio/audio is now not working. I was wondering whether someone could help me / point me in the write direction into how to get it working again. All is has on the screen ATM is numbers, so I a press say any of the presets of play with any of the knobs it either displays " - - - - - " or "1" or other numbers etc.

The stereo is the standard one that came with the car. (1998 TF Advance)
I have been told many different things to fix it, I.e: security codes? Resetting battery etc.

Looking for assistance, cheers! :)

sounds like things i would do.

I don't suppose you have a spare HU to test out. Might just be the standard head unit has just given up the go. Im not sure if they have a Reset button like most head units these days. I know mine has one on the front. But like i say, its more modern.

Nah I don't. If it was the security code, where would I find?

For a security code you'll have to go through Mitsubishi themselves. Problem with stock head units is that they are hard to get around the inbuilt security. However another member may be more knowledgable about this then i.

What happens when you try to put any numbers in?

Don't bother trying to put numbers in if you don't know the security code. Waste of time.
Visit your local Mitsu dealer with the car's VIN and they will give you the code. 4 digit number, use the 1 to 4 station buttons to put in each digit, eg if the first number is "6", press the "1" station button 6 times.
Need to do this every time the battery is disconnected.

[Dealer may or may not charge for this. Cost me $10, 3 months later the CD player died and I now have a nice Pioneer MVH-155UI. Much better sound, plays MP3s from an 8 GB USB stick, but $10 wasted. Oh well. lol]

You get 3 or 4 shots at putting in the right numbers, if incorrect it locks up and sulks - ignition off for 30 minutes then you can start again.

Why the security code, you ask?
Well, in the old days, car radios, especially those that played CDs, were state of the art and VERY expensive and sought after by crooks and they would break in just to steal the radio. Hence the security code setup and the tags on the windows. These days CD players are worth very little second hand or new.

Daniel, go into a dealer and they can look it .

Failing that, call them up and if you send a copy of your transfer papers into your name and they can send you the coffee. Did it with my tj

Why not take the aged old radio out and put something fresh in there? 1998 was like 200 years ago! (Maths is not one of my strong points.)

No honestly, a modern deck is so much more capable.

Blowing my own horn here:
Pioneer MVH-155UI, Ipod/Iphone charge and control, USB, AUX, MP3/WAV, 5 band eq, can run 2.5" HD on USB port (as long as it is FAT32 formatted). 3 FM, 1 AM band.$55. (JB HiFi post Xmas special).
No CD reader to stuff up down the track. Same model also available with BT connectivity.
Another $10 for connectors.
$7 for an 8GB USB stick.
Couple of hours to pull out the old TL unit and bin it (recycle bin of course).
Great sound.
AND no code to worry about.
No one looking at it or listening to it would guess it cost me all of $72. lol

At the very least check out the prices and abilities of a modern deck.

Sound quality, features, cost effectiveness, bragging rights = aftermarket...

Keeping it original = factory head unit

I have a Sony xplod Bluetooth unit in mine, which has decent sound from the factory 10 speaker setup, but honestly I would have preferred the original look :-)

I got the same unit but with the bluetooth feature (Pioneer MVH-355BT). It wasn't as cheap as yours though mate. :P

It works well. I love how I can just plug a flash drive into it. The bluetooth is a great feature and this unit has an external microphone. The bluetooth even continues to work with the stereo turned off (which I found out by sheer coincidence, but it's very handy)
I would certainly recommend going the after market.

I did it as I also had the same problem with the original factory head unit in my car. It was always asking for a code, and as I didn't have the code, I decided an after market unit would be easier, so got one and had it installed by a friend.

I'm glad I don't have to use CD's anymore... :)

I'm happy with it. I went the CD-less route this time because I bought a TJ 2 years ago, standard issue radio packed up the CD player soon after. Bought a TL 4 months ago, same thing, CD player died. Was worried the USB stick interface might be slow or lacking in options, but it's excellent.
Current price for mine at JB HIFi is $149, sticker for that price was still on the box when it arrived. I must have stumbled on some sale I didn't know about, at the right time. eBay is currently cheaper, about $120.
Don't miss the CD player part at all, USB stick is excellent way to do things, menu selection to find any specific track is easy. Tried my 2.5" portable hard driver and Ipod on it, works well. Sticking to the USB stick though, not leaving Ipod or HD in the car. lol
Good to hear the bluetooth part of that model works well. Maybe one day . . .

Big improvement over the stock radio. Wonder if it would work with my Android phone as far as charging/music playback goes? Haven't tried that yet. Probably not.

some people just want to listen to the radio and for the $20 or so it costs to get the code from a dealer its a lot cheaper and less hassle than installing a new deck. plus its a lot less likely to get stolen.

Too true. Interest in car audio varies greatly. Each to his own. Wouldn't have bothered replacing the original radio if the CD player hadn't stuffed up, have a couple of CDs I like to listen to.
My wife does NOT want the radio on at any time, even when I'm driving her car or when she is in my car. Make up for it when I'm in the car by myself. lol

It's on my "to do" list, Dave. As soon as I finish installing the fluffy dice on the rear view mirrors, fake fox tail on the aerial and lacy curtains on the rear door windows. Looking for white wall tyres and daisy flower transfers for the outside too at the moment, busy busy!
