A workmate's Pajero engine has died - ran out of oil - don't ask.

If his engine is a 6G74 then can a Magna motor be put in there? I see some sellers on eBay selling 6G74 engines as being for Magna, Verada and some for Pajero. Can a Magna one be fitted if the ancilliaries from the dead Paj engine be transferred?

Check on the Pajero forums to see what the differences are ie: cams, sump, oil pickup, ignition setup, threaded holes for engine mounts on side of block etc. Am pretty sure it has been done before.

Cheers

Which pajero was it?

I believe they ran an east-west orientation so it would need modification to mounts etc etc

Can be done but cam angle sensor bracket mounts are missing on the heat so you need to be creative

The 99 Pajero is an NL model. 3.5 L SOHC - same as the Magna 3.5, except that they use coil packs not a distributor. To buy a Pajero engine will be costly. A Magna 3.5 is cheap. You need to swap over oil pickup, sump, block up the distributor drive end of the head, install a cam angle sensor from the dead engine and as far as I know that is all. All the sensors should come from the old engine and ti should all work. Hopefully I won't get to that stage with mine...

Yes they do fit, I have just last week finished putting a late TL Magna into a NL Pajero, as stated you need to strip both engines to bare, things to be changed over include:
oil pump and pickup,sump,intake,rocker covers,rear cam hole plates,timing covers,exhaust manifolds,dip stick tube,balancer
I left the Magna cams in place but thats up to you if you want to change them, you need to make a plate for cam sensor to mount to

I had a 8/04 engine from TL and i had to drill and thread 4 engine mount holes but have been told the earlier engines had the holes there already

That is great to know, thanks for putting up the information. This means the 3.8 will also go in, looks like I will need to get busy and start doing this to my NM soon I guess

Just as an update

Have started teh 6G75 conversion .... finally

The engine mounts do line up fine, on one side one bolt hole does not have a boss however there is one next to the mount so simple matter of welding a tab onto the mount bracket, have spoken to my engineer and he stated will be fine. On LHS of the motor 3 of the bolt holes line up perfectly, one is simply not there. You can see on the block where there should have been a boss however Mits did delete several bosses on the blocks of the 380's for some unknown reason. Either way it is an upper one and we have decided to just run with the 3 bolts that are there and weld a tab onto the back of the 4th hole to rest on the block as in this position most of the strain will be back towards the block anyway. Not idea however aside from then welding a new boss onto the engine block we have no other option

Will later today be starting to take all the other parts off the Paj motor, 99% looks like will be straight bolt on bolt off including the cam angle sensor which has the bosses on the head there and waiting.

Well have found the difference, the NL may be ok as is pretty much a Magna engine in so far as water pump and timing belt etc but the NM/P certainly is not even close

Issues are several. Most can be gotten around however one big one can not be which is the sump and the oil pump

The Pajero Oil pump has the filter on the other side of the motor and the pump from the Paj will not go onto the 3.8. If I could get around the sump even on its own I would look further however the shape around the oil pump is also different so as I have to do so much fabrication I may as well just purchase a NP 3.8 write off and use that motor.

Sad, now have a 28k old 380 motor sitting here in bits as well as what was a perfectly good Pajero 3.5 (well both are fine just need all the bits bolted back on I guess)

Sorry for bringing up an old post.
But, my tenant has an NL and needs to change the heads, so, as I understand this, this means heads off the TH/KH will fit and have the bolt holes already on the heads for the cam angle sensor to mount too?
