Guys, when I turn my car at low speeds, I hear a couple of clunks, sounding like it could be the CV joints dying? Could this be the case or could it be something else behind the wheels? I have a 98 TF v6 with 164000 ks, so it may be time to change - Anyone done this? And how much did it set you back?

Cheers

Mick

i was told by a CV joint shop that it will eventually wear out at around 125,000 km and with your car it sounds about right. i was quoted $145 to do it per side, supplied and fitted, so that's not too bad i think.

Definately the outer CV joints, as long as its only when u turn you should be right for a while.

I left mine clicking for several months before i got around to replacing them. Which i did just today :D

Its not recomended to hold em off for so long, but its not all that dangerous if its just a slight ticking. Or so im told.

Replacing them isnt very dear either, i got my driving shafts for $77 each, and got them put in by Malcom (Madmagna) on here. But roughly ud be looking at around $130 inc. fitting a side to replace them.

Just take it easy around corners, and try not to accelerate hard while in full lock, and you should be ok till its fixed. But dont wait too long..

Mitsis quoted $330 supplied and fitted. Cripes!

is it hard installing CVs our selves? I don't need CVs yet(despite the 165k km on odo), however I plan to install them myself when the occasion arises.

MadMagna, any inputs to this?

while we're on the topic of clunks and clicks, is it normal transmission to sometimes clunk when changing from D to R?

change over cv's are reasonably easy to fit, you just need a large socket for the hub nut and a big lever to drive it because sometimes the hub nut is damn tight. then disconnect the ball joint and swing the lower half of the strut clear of the cv so you can pull it from the gearbox. if your car only clunks when going from D to R and not the other way around have a look at your engine mounts

Just had mine done.

Outers. Part was about $150. However I got both done by Outter Control for $310. Less If I drove into their shop but they come out to my work.

Good deal IMHO.
