TW wago auto, 89k, pulled on hte handbrake yesterday, lever just kept coming up, brake didn't work. I looked under the center console box and the lever thingy that pulls on the two cables is at about a 45degree angle to where it should be, as if one cable is not doing anything, or broken.

Is there a common handbrake problem with these cars?

thanks

Check the other end of the cables. Probably broke the mounting bracket.
Not common, at least I hope not, got a TL wagon - must have a look to see how mine are doing.

Exact same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago. The last mount on the back of the rear wheel hub has probably broken off. If this is the case you should be able to spot it pretty easily if you jack the car up and take the rear wheels off. The bracket under the center console will then sit on a angle like you described. It is possible to adjust the hand brake so that you have enough tension so the side thats not broken will still pull tight enough to engage. This is how I am running mine atm until i get around to fixing it, and of course leaving it in gear when parking. A new cable from mitsu is around $100, although that is for a TJ sedan, TW wagon may be different.

What was even more rediculous about mine was that the passenger side was broken when I purchased the car. Paid for some one to replace it with a new one and the drivers side went 1 day later!!! Going to do the drivers side cable myself this time though, got a good look at the path it takes under the car when it was on a hoist last and it dosn't look that difficult at all.

Mine was broken about 2 months ago. The rear left pin was actually broken and the tension on the cable was lost. After doing some playing aorund we were able to fix the cable and replace the pin and all is good. The hand brake is the best its been since :).

Where in SA are you located?

TL and TW dont break these mounts as they are cast unlike the TJ and earlier

Will be either the cable or may be the pins in the rear unit inside the drum, these sometimes come out and then there is nothing for the arm to push on when you use the handbrake

I took it to K-mart who took it apart and some pin had come out. They said that this was because it had been adjusted at the front and never at the back (Thank you, Mitsubishi dealer where it was serviced). They put it all back together, works perfectly, charged me an hour labout, $100, happy, with this, now perfect.
