hey guys im after a compact powered sub to try & recoup some of my boot space. right now i have a 10" DD sub in a box & was wondering about something a little more compact.
im not after a sub that u can hear from down the road - just something that is good in the car & punchy. I also dont want to spend a lot - not looking to win any comps with it ;)
any brand/model suggestions?

I can tell you Focal make an excellent sounding one, the model is iBus2.1 and Marty at http://fhrxstudios.com.au/ should be able to do you a good price on one. If you tell him if found him via MEA or sign up to MEA as im pretty sure members get a discount.

Take a look at Jaycars one - http://www.jaycar.com.au/productView.asp?ID=CS2286
Not the most powerful, but good to add some bottom end

I fitted one of these in a kia van a few months back, nothing really great about them, the small 8 inch driver, small enclosure and average components its nothing to excite yourself with TBH. I wouldn't say it adds any real bottom end as that is achieved by either a larger driver, a larger enclosure or overall better design which comes with a higher price.

How would that go under the drivers seat in a magna? drmurue needs a bit space in the boot for moving his livelihood around..
Fli audio, Hertz, Fusion, Vibe Audio and many others have a compact system, I think Pioneer (Linky) (http://www.pioneer.com.au/au/products/25/131/201/TS-WX77A/page.html)make a long wide and flat unit that would fit (?) against the boot wall, but it would block off the Ski Port.. But I have never heard any of them....

My wife's car has a factory subwoofer with a 20W (probably 20W max!) amplifier and a single 4.1" driver inside a convoluted plastic box.
It's not an earth shaker, in fact it barely rattles the rear view mirror, but it does add to the sound. We'll often listen to techno as well as many other music styles and it's much better with the sub than without.
So my opinion is any bass is better than none.
What sort of an enclosure is your DD in? I've got a 12" sub in a wedge box. This sits behind my passenger seat and a little Jaycar amp mounted vertically in the back corner of the boot feeds it power. My 4 year olds legs are short, so his feet sit on top of the box and effectively the boot space is not impacted.
The benefit of having the sub practically next to me is it doesn't have to work as hard to rattle the rear view mirror of the car in the other lane. :D

It will fit fine under the drivers said fine, it'll give some good midbass probably do alright down to about 56hz-ish.
I saw one of those Pioneer active boxes in Autobarn, holy crap they are big, I thought it was just a new amp at the start.
I'll vouch for the Focal unit. They work very very well considering their size. I'm also a Focal fanboy :P

Thanx for your input guys - after seeing Martys setup i think ill try something similar. He has his sub mounted in a custom fiberglass enclosure in the side "indent" of his boot. Should be interesting as I have no clue how to build something like that lol
