View Full Version : Three questions about removing resonator
Is it legal?
How many Kgs would it free up?
Does it improve overall exhaust flow when combined with pacemakers, 100 CPSI and Lukey?
Cheers all!

I guess it wouldn't weight that much.
Most likely would be illegal since your car would be too loud.
My guess would be your car is already close to the 90dB limit, removing the resonator would definitely make it over that, and would also make it drone.

the resonator is vital IMO to stopping your car from sounding like shit. If you want some more sound replace the rear muffler with something smaller.

It is legal to remove as long as it doesn't make too much noise, but it may cause excessive droning inside the vehicle. Exhaust flow won't be improved that much, it would be better to replace it with a good, high flow resonator. A good resonator will reduce drone and horrible exhaust noise, and have basically no impact on performance. There are one or two resonators that will actually (supposedly) improve performance over having no resonator at all, due to their internal design. Is a 100CPSI catalytic converter legal in Australia?
Examples of resonators that supposedly can improve performance slightly:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Tornado-Resonator-Hot-Dog-15-x-3-in-out-HIGH-FLOW-Stainless-Steel-RES01-/390375662500?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5ae433e3a4
or:
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Tornado-MUFFLER-Mild-Steel-16-x-3-NEW-High-Flow-/390331276720?pt=AU_Car_Parts_Accessories&hash=item5ae18e9db0
or the best one that will actually fit. The muffler version is basically just a twin resonator version. I believe the muffler version will fit in the space of the resonator, so would be a better option.

100cpi is illegal in magnas.

Disagree, mine has been removed from my VR-X exhaust on my GTV (Previous owner had it replaced with straight pipe, my guess is it got a hole in it or something) and it has improved sound quality overall. It is a bit louder and sounds meaner, but still idles quietly. It has made it very slightly droney in some situations but I'm really nitpicking, I consider it an improvement. If you put the right amount of throttle in, at about 2000-2500rpm you get a really brilliant throaty rasp, I love it. :D
Put it this way, I asked a girl I was taking out on a date who has absolutely no interest in modified or sporty cars if the car was too loud and she said she thought it sounded quite nice, not loud at all. :P
I also went through a roundabout at about half my normal speed and she asked me to slow down. I've never driven so sedately!

I weighed the exhaust parts from two TJ's a while ago. One with a stock exhaust, the other modded to include a resonator replaced with a hot dog style. So, not a completely removed resonator.
anyway, I took the time to weigh the parts as they came off;
Cat back, or middle section;
TL GTVi - 9.3kg
Modified - 5.5kg (hot dog style resonator in place of center muffler)
Also +1000000000 for NOT removing the resonator! Holy cow, it sounds BAD. Put something back in there. I told the exhaust shop "I'm happy with the volume, I just don't like the song" and they just seem to know what to put back in.

I meant to say "two magnas" not "two TJs" can't seem to edit posts from Forum Runner.

I have many customers with no centre res in the system and to be honest I hate the sound of this, they are loud and there is nothing worse sounding than a V6 with a rasp, is is not meant to sound like that.
OP, was it you I was reading somewhere you were preparing a track car, if so then by all means remove it but if on the street leave it. There is no benefit with replacing with a hot dog as both are straight through anyway.

If you want to save miniscule amounts of weight for handling, just drive with a low tank of fuel or drive in bare feet and leave your shoes at home. Also, it is illegal (even though that's not a good term) to remove any part unless you have the car noise tested and submit it to your State registration authority as a modified vehicle. Also, in NSW the EPA (or whatever name it uses now) expects the vehicle to have the same noise output as original with a mild tolerance.

The Fun Police have arrived :P
I don't want to debate the laws, or how serious the states are about enforcing them... I mean revenue raising. And I can't really argue the core of your post Pete. You are right. There are laws to govern noise pollution. And that's why exhaust shops don't sell loud mufflers or exhaust systems. And it's the same reason there are so many whisper quiet Hardly Davidsons cruising around. Those laws are just so important.
I don't like loud cars or bikes. But I do like intelligent creativity as long as it doesn't hurt anybody. It's my feeling that soon these laws will snuff out any intelligent creativity.
There, that's my anti-establishment rant over.

I like this.
Rip off that resonator if you like OP. I know plenty of people driving around with straight through exhausts. You'll be right. If you don't like not having one, weld in an aftermarket one.
Another weight saving idea is to remove the exhaust heat shields, just don't park on dry grass.

Emphasis on " ...intelligent creativity as long as it doesn't hurt anybody..." Like them or not, laws are laws, either enforced to protect the safety of everybody or to raise funds for the government, we need to adhere to them. But if you find a loop hole, or a grey area, then I'm all for taking advantage of it, provided nobody is getting hurt.

Lugo took the center resonator out of his old Magna and he hated the sound of it, from memory. Sounded like someone was strangling a duck.

Weird that all you guys are reporting so many issues with it where my car sounds completely fine and not wholly different from stock? Makes me wonder if maybe something else is different about the system. I hate ricer exhausts, mine is definitely completely fine or I'd change it.

Good to ask a girl who has no idea about cars opinion.

She doesn't have no idea, she has no interest. So she doesn't like cars with loud/shitty exhausts. It's the best person to ask if you need a normal person's opinion on something like that, if you ask your car mates you'll just get "Nah sounds sick bro, what size milo can did you use? Think I have the same system on my fully sick <insert import.>"
When I was getting the straight through muffler put on my car, we started it up witout the muffler on the back (resonator still on though) and were suprised that it wasn't all that loud :-S. Only got loud as such when you gave it the beans but it sounded like crap either way. I have yet to hear 1 magna V6 minus the resonator that sounds good. I'm with the rest of the guys here. V6 and rasp just don't go together.
