hello this is my first post in the wonderful aussie magna club forum,
I have a 2001 TJ magna advance and after a lot of research online and speaking to a whreckers i have decided my box is toast, driving fine then all of a sudnen no forward drive gears and no reverse also no limp homemode which i would of been greatful to have. after checking the colour of auto fluid which is obviously dark in colour not pink or red not even really a hint of red or pink in colur i think ive made the conclusion that the pressure plates are stuffed or maybe oilpump, either way i need to replace the entire box as its going to be a project for me to take the old one out and install a replacement.
now my question is and i realize the box numbers must match my box number is F4A51K2B5B and then the line under that on the box is MW8081
can someone please explain what the seacond line is and is it nessecerry to have top line and seacond line match or does it just need to be the
F4A51K2B5B that needs to match? if so can someone please tell me what the seacond line of code represents ie MW8081 code .

Tj advance IIRC is a 4 speed auto. You just need to find a 4 speed auto from a tf th or tj.

Might be the common wave spring issue? I haven't seen it (driving a TH without tippy) but this sounds like it?

Oh for crying out loud, not every bloody failure is a wave spring. Wave spring will not stop the box dead in its tracks.......

As dreggsy stated any 4 sp except from te will work. They are all the same and ppl who Skype on about numbers are as bad as the wave spring crowd. The series went te then tf,h j then tl,w. those were the 3 different boxes used.

The tippy function is purely an ecu controlled feature, the only difference between tf and early th is the screw on filter. Late th and tj had no filter but function the same

thank you, i have tracked down a second hand box with the same top line of code from a 2001 tj, 400 hundred dollars with three month replacement warranty.
i get the box in three weeks and will be attempting to remove and install the box by myself. i have the workshop manual and have been going threw the diferent sections reading up on all i can. basically i think i just have to start taking the old one out and take it from there. if you know of any information or posts that might help with the removal and instalation of the box it would be greatly apreciated.
i'm pretty sure once i start removing the old box i should be right removing cv joints etc is no big deal and im just going to remove center member and lower the old one out. i will let you know how i get on.
cheers

Make sure you unplug all electrics. Draining the fluid first makes life easier as well.

if you need any pointers, shoot me a PM.

Mine went November last year and I've been going through a similar process of finding out information.
Apart from the Service Manual I found this thread the most useful:
http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=71818

If you want to see some pictures, I'm pretty sure MagnaP.I. uploaded some in his members machines thread when he did the removal.

Otherwise it's just trial and error. Having the right tools is half the job. I broke a socket extension, a breaker bar and a crappy wrench in the process.

would you be able to advise on gasgets and sealents required. what they are called so i can get them from REPCO or auto one or somewhere.
also do i need to undo any engine mounts and to angel the motor downwards? or just support the motor in its place and undo gearbox and lower it with jack?

I could have sworn I saw a couple of pics in his thread.

Anyways you'll find there are close to no pictures of it. There are no DIY as such, just a couple of threads with personal experiences and a couple of tips. Check out that link above, one post in it was pretty detailed and prepared me well.

If you want to do it, and really do it, read and check under the bonnet and have a look at the parts being talked about. Use google images to find out how they look on other cars.

To remove it disconnect battery, drain fluids, disconnect all plugs going to the transmission, raise it and remove the black support in the middle under the car, remove drive shafts, flick the thrust bearing off, unbolt the transmission and mounts and be aware it will come down.

That's a really basic description of it, definitely read a couple of the removal threads and look at the transmission. You'll get a good clue of what you'll need to do.

Big spanner on the other end of the crankshaft.
Make sure you push the torque converter all the way into the gearbox once those bolts are off. Don't want it dropping out when you remove the box. Be careful if you reuse the torque converter with the new box, to engage the tangs into the oil pump in the box correctly. Some locktite on those bolts when you connect the torque converter to the drive plate.
