Hi guys,
I have a 2000 Verada Xi KH. While I was driving today suddenly it was like the car was in neutral even though it was in drive. I pulled over, turned the car off and on again, tried reverse, and drive again but it would only rev up. It's like the gears aren't engaging. I ended up getting RACV to tow me home!
:pleasesign:I'm not that mechanically minded so wondering if anyone can shed some light on my problem? I haven't taken it to a mechanic yet. What's the best way (most cost effective) to get my car up and running again.
Thanks for any advice

Used trans, is most likely oil pump in the trans

You can reco your trans but very expensive or get a good used trans for around the $650 mark

The oil pump is inside the gearbox. If you're going to replace that, you might as well recondition the box.

Thanks for your replies. I found out exactly the details of the problem from someone that had posted on another website Mitsubishi verada: was driving along when came out off gear
(http://www.justanswer.com/mitsubishi/739pm-mitsubishi-verada-driving-along-when-off-gear.html) something identical to my symptoms.
..."By the symptoms that you have, your transmission probably has no electronic control faults, but has I'd say sustained a major internal failure. The most common problem that these transmission have is there is an internal part called a wave spring, that can break up, which means that small parts of it are left to circulate inside the transmission with the fluid, causing no symptoms or noises at all, but when a small enough piece gets to the transmission oil pump it can cause an immediate loss of line pressure, which in turn makes the transmission loose all gears without any warning. This can affect the 4 and 5 speed models of this transmission series and means that it will require removal and a major repair or replacement. You have a couple of options, one would be a secondhand transmission from the wreckers, but keep in mind that they usually only offer a short warranty (max 3 months) and the condition of most is unknown as they rarely get to drive the cars before wrecking them. Another option would be to have your transmission repaired at a reputable automatic transmission shop, hopefully you have some close by. If so give them a call and check out pricing and warranty options as the industry standard is anywhere from 1 - 3 years."
I called my local transmission specialist in found here http://www.atraonline.com.au/ and it's going to cost me $1350 for the repair.

You need to replace or recondition the gearbox.
If that were to happen to me, I would buy one from a wrecker for about $200 and replace it. Seeing this is a job you are unlikely to be able to do yourself, take it to a workshop. A local mechanic would probably charge you about $200-$300 to remove your old box and put on the "new" one. All up about a $500 job instead of a $1500 job.
However the quote that you have got is rather cheap for this kind of work, if you intend on keeping the car for many years to come, I would recommend to go with that option. It gives a bit more peace of mind and a much better warranty.

Getting a box for $200 from the average wrecker would be rare, most charge $550 onwards, I charge $550 for the older style and $650 for the newer style 4sp auto's, i often buy cars just to get a trans out as I rarely have more than 1 on the shelf and often none
In relation to driving the car, a lot of wreckers do not drive the car but I do, if I can not drive the car to feel the shifting of the trans the trans either goes to get a strip down and reco or gets left in the car for scrap

Yeah I called my local wreckers and they quoted me between $660-$850 for the transmission depending on which one I would require.

Have you thought of a manual conversion - may not be for all but it'd be what I'd be considering if my trans ever died.

Pretty much flat rate. 3 month warranty is about $20 or so off the top of my head. Easy to refund if it is no good.
