Hi All,
The speedo in my Verada december-1997 station wagon, reads zero km/h most of the time. However, twice in the last two weeks, the speedo started working perfectly for the entire 1/2 hour trip. (I use my GPS as a speedo instead).
The cruise control works perfectly all the time., so I assume that the Speed sensor is working fine.
I have removed and replaced the "combination meter" to reseat the connections, but that had no effect. I can't find the pin outs of the connectors in the workshop manuals, so I don't know where to put a multimeter probe to check voltages. I also can't figure out where the other end of the loom goes.
Anyone have an idea of how to fix this?
Cheers.

You need a new cluster

Thanks for the reply. You are saying that the speedo "meter" is faulty? I was hoping that a loose connection might be to blame - as the "meter" started working twice. I sometimes find intermittent faults boil down to bad connections.
To prove the "combination meter" is faulty, do you know which pins I can apply a voltage to ensure there is no response on the speedo needle? (I gather getting a spare part for this is going to be tricky - a repair maybe easier - I like electronics!)

I had this same problem in my TF Sports.
Cruise Control worked, Speed alarm worked but speedo didn't.
Odometer/Trip meter worked fine.
Speedo would be 0 when doing 60 or 80km/h.
When I set speed alert to 100km/h and set cruise, the speedo would suddenly peak up and go over 100 and sit around 120. When doing 110, it would go to 140.
Another 2nd hand Sports Cluster fitted and 'wha-la', problem solved.
Regarding a 2nd hand cluster, do you need to get it signed off by vicroads or a mechanic?

Nope, just fit it, often ppl record the mileage on both to keep track
Unless you have a pulse generator can't test it.

I have all sorts of CRO's and pulse generators - but no information on pinouts, timing, voltage or duty cycle required. Anyone know if this type of information is available?
Also, everything works on the "cluster" except the speedo and the odometer. Are these driven by the car computer separately? By the way the speed limit alarm function and cruise control works.
Speedo/ODO also worked 50% of the trips today - very intermittent! I wonder if there is a dry solder joint in the cluster somewhere.
Cheers

Cruise and speed alarm are driven by the pulse gen so if they work it is the speedo that has the issue, have seen a few of these go
