View Full Version : Tyre wear on edges - is it just a fact of life for the front of a KF?

295,000km, time for new tyres, again. They always scrub out on the inside of the driver's side front tyre and the outside of the passenger's side front tyre. Alignment is supposedly correct, what else should I be looking out for?

I'm headed to mits-fix soon for a trans service, is there anything else I should point out on the front suspension which might be causing premature tyre edge wear, or is it just a fact of life for large front wheel drive cars?

Sounds like a camber issue

Or too much toe in.

before I do any wheel alignment I check the front end on every car for movement and if it does I will refuse to do it until its fixed cause I cant guarantee a proper job, there is no guarantee that the company you went to does the same. also it is recommended that you get your wheel alignment checked every ten thousand kilometers.....or if you hit something big and solid like an island. if your going to the mechanics then get them to check the steering rack and the bushes in the lower control arms.

Have you got a print-out of your latest alignment?

My lower control are bushes have like this thick grease stuff coming out of them, noticed it when I changed the oil last weekend, does that mean they need replacing? I have uneven tyre wear too? my car is a KH Verada

Leaking bushes = crappy bushes. Replace them.

Tyre wear on the outside edge of the L wheel and the inside edge of the R wheel suggests that the car is trying to pull to the left and you are correcting it as you drive along. It could be something with the rear suspension - the car could be crabbing.

We had wear on the inner edges of the front tyres on our TF, but that was caused by toe-in - as the springs sagged the centres of the wheels got further apart whilst the steering rack remained at a fixed distance. Toe-in became toe-out. Why do springs sag on inported vehicles? WHy do manufacturers insist on using MacPherson struts?(cheap design).

Our TF wore tyres evenly after correcting the toe-in. The toe-in margin is very wide - something like zero to 5 mm toe-in and our Magna dodn't seem to be very sensitive to the changes.

Ok cool thanks for the advice, I thought they were just rubber, I didn't realise they were packed with grease too.

Some are, some aren't.
