Hi all,
Our existing mirror won't pass a Roadworthy; because the chrome layer is about 30% hanging off internally.Wondering if anyone can provide a safe step-by-step process for doing this - I have heard that it's really easy to crack the windscreen getting the old one off.

Anyone at all? Don't want to risk a busted windscreen? :kb:

Al, Dont despair it can be one.
Two things first...if your new chromatic mirror has the metal "tag" that is normally attached to the windscreen, this can be removed easily with the use of two small flat head screw drivers...
1. Position the mirror on a table mirror side face down on a blanket to protect it
2. Re-align the mirror stalk so its upright, not on an angle, you'll see why next step
3. With one screw driver push down on the clip, hard, just enough to make a 0.5 to 1 mm gap.
4. with the other screw driver insert on the opposite side gap between the "tag" and the mirror's meta chasis, and twist, the tag will slide off
Now how do you get the one off the car...
1. You can apply Mal's method but, you also risk cracking the windscreen...the importatnt thing is to put lateral force along the window not outwards.
2. My method is different, it destroys the tag on the original TJ mirror...no big deal.
3. The clip at the mirrors oppening look like two "buck Teeth", they are made up of a "u" bend. Use a dremel and grind these away so that the clip is broken into two
4. Without any resistance offered by the clip you can then push the mirror upwards towards the roof and it will come off.
Replace with the new mirror and your done.
If you need further explanation or pictures let me know...
Cheers,
Bill

Yeah, don't just grab it and try to pull it off, you will pull a lump of the inner layer of glass right off the screen.
There is a metal clip you need to push in, between the mirror and the fixed mirror mount. A small screwdriver will do it. Then lift up.
I needed a new screen in my TJ anyway, so I just yanked it, cleaned up the mounting pad and glued it to the new screen. The mirror was also starting to peel internally, so I broke the locking tab off the mirror before I put it back on. When I find a decent mirror, I will swap them over. Got any supplier for a new one?
EDIT: Sir Sparkles beat me to it . . . . . bother!

Last time I looked at the wreckers they were all gone, with that tell tale lump missing from the windscreen. lol
Good excuse to go parts hunting again though.

This is precisely what happened when I parted out my wreck. Luckily I wasn't too bothered. :P

OK - must admit it can be helpful on occasion; but have you seen how broad the results can be also? Sometimes they appear totally unrelated?

Because the search feature on all forums is useless. It will bring up any thread is remotely related - usually just people asking the same question.

So true Steve, the search is hopeless on this site, so don't take any notice of sparky, don't blame you for asking direct advice, I have done the same.
