Hey guys,

Tried doing a search but just came up with heaps of threads not even related to the subject.

Been doing some research and have come across the RPW Cold Air Induction Kit. Has anyone installed one of these on their Magna? Have you got any pics? Notice a power increase? Is it worth it?

http://www.rpw.com.au/shop/index.php?page=shop.product_details&flypage=flypage.tpl&product_id=403&category_id=339&option=com_virtuemart&Itemid=1&vmcchk=1&Itemid=1

There is a pic but it is too small to see. Just wanted to get some opinions before I spend $340 on one, if I decide too.

Cheers,
Ben

Cold air intakes have been proven to make very little difference to power or driveability on Magnas. Definitely not worth $340.

Waste of time and money. :-)

Buy a new official air filter, job done. :)

Magna as is, sucks air from under the leading edge of the bonnet. Is air going to be cooler anywhere else?

If someone gave me one, I would not bother to unpack it. $340? Tell them they are dreaming!

Ok good to know, is there any mods that are worth doing that will give more performance?

Thanks, I was just asking, just wanted to know if it was a worthwhile mod.

My Magna has a new Ryco Air Filter, looks like that is as good as I can get :)

Extractors will improve driveability but are pretty pricey. Free-flowing rear muffler is best bang for buck. You could look at an ECU reflash but a lot of those gains come from tuning for a higher octane fuel. 380 cams make a difference, but I'm not sure how common they are these days given the popularity of 6G75 conversions. The stock air intake/filter etc isn't a restriction so there's no real gains to be had.

Ben205vs, I noticed in your signature you have the 2.4 and 3.5 Magna, what is the fuel economy difference between the 2?

Ben if you want one for sound, one of the Vic members has one lying around. Can ask about it tonight at the meet

my filter needed to be changed, so i just put a K&N panel filter, it accually sounds better at higher rpm i noticed, power feels the same....

Yes K&N's although handy and "cool" provide no advantages other than cleaning over genuine air filters.
IMO: Buy genuine filter, forget about it.

I heard its been proven onn the dyno that the standard filter when clean flows better than the p and n panel filter. So I think they run a clean one at all times :)

I would strongly doubt that claim, that said there no real gains from k & n or cold air intake especially for N/A application.

Well I have seen this personally a few times, the issue with K&N is when out of the box they are about the same as the Std paper filter, get a little bit of dust on them and they clog up quickly. Most when they clean them over oil them and they flow worse.

When I say the paper is better we are only talking 1 or 2 kw at best but still there is no reason to rush out and get a K&N

As for CAI, I have replaced a couple of motors which had huge failures due to water being sucked up and hydro locking the motor, personally I would not waste my time but that said some do like the induction noise from these and that is about all you will gain

i can testify k&n being worse.. i did the dyno runs with my car and lost 2kw

i will add in saying that i felt the k&n was no different when i drove the car... which i feel is more important so i dont think it really matters.

I will have to get back to you on that. I filled up the TJ Magna when I bought it and haven't had to fill it up again yet, wait until I start driving it more.

Just for referance (as by now you obviously have your answer) but i recently took off the RPW CAI that was on my TJ when I purchased it and went back to standard. Noticed no difference at all in power. Also could not believe RPW charge $340 for something so basic, surely you could source the parts yourself for half that price.
