I let my friend take my car the other night to pick up a mate, he tells me the engine just cut out, the wheels locked for a moment and then it just continued rolling.
Now when i got to start it it doesn't even crank just clicks and does nothing.
has anyone else had a similar problem and if so how did you solve it?
thanks in advance.

Manual or auto?
Can you turn over the motor if you put a spanner on the crank pulley bolt? (ie did it seize up? any oil in the engine?)
There's only one way front wheels in a manual can lock up suddenly all by themselves, and it has little to do with the starter motor . . . .

as above check if it turns over
22mm bolt left hand side . put the wheel full lock to the left there,s an hole you can put a socket though.

It is an automatic.
about the oil, i used to have a problem where the oil light came on sometimes when i was driving (not constant) but changing the oil and filter fixed that, there is also a little bit of an oil leak, another time i was driving with my friend in the car after the oil change the revs got pretty high and the oil light came back on, after stopping the car to go into the shop and get back in the light was fine. dont know if that helps at all though.
im going to go try turn it with a socket now, thanks for the advice

just tried to turn it with a socket and didn't have any luck. im guessing this means the engine is seized?

Sounds like it's seized.
If the oil light came on at high revs, there has been a definite problem for a while. Got a big dent in the sump, or a sump full of sludge, by any chance?
(How wheels can lock up by themselves in an auto is beyond me though. )

How wheels can lock up by themselves in an auto is beyond me though.
Support bearing on the passenger side driveshaft can freeze.
Also trans final drive may self destruct as well. Plenty of things can happen.
the revs got pretty high and the oil light came back on
The high revs might have been the trans slipping and the clutch packs let go possibly as well??
Sounds like the vehicle may have had multiple problems possibly.
I also wonder if you are at speed and lockup converter has kicked in and engine seizes you may get a temporary driveline freeze as well. Vee

Pulling the spark plugs out will make it easier as you may be fighting compression otherwise. Vee
