View Full Version : Setting up new headunit
Hi all,
Installing my new headunit. Read somewhere the easiest way was to buy the connecters and plug them together. All seemed to go very well but i cant seem to get power to the headunit. I've grounded it all etc, and the only difference between the plug sony gave me and the one i got from supercheap is 1 blue connection, 1 slot away from the other. I haven't moved it across yet though, the manual doesn't tell me what it is.... The headunit is a Sony GT610UG

I recently upgraded my Head Unit to an alpine one. The plug that came with the unit was an alpine to universal one.
So I just bought a Universal to Mitsubishi one and it worked fine. Be careful though because there are two types of Mitsubishi connectors, from memory magna's are the type 2.
Hope this helps
Correction: Magnas are a type 1, you've got the right Mitsubishi connector there

Checked the fuses..?
If you have a multimeter, check that the harness itself is getting power.

Ok, im slowly making progress.. I ended up soldering all the cables together from the Mitsubishi extension to the one supplied with the headunit, soldered them all together and have heatshink around them (not shrunken yet), i was just testing it after soldering and it wasn't working until the red (+12 Volt Ignition Wire) and Purple Stripe (Right Rear Speaker (-) ) accidentally touched. I then heard a noise from the Right rear speaker (no surprises there) and the headunit turned on, the lights and everything powered on and it displayed 1:00, none of the buttons worked in this mode either.
Would a mod please move this thread into the car audio section? I think i might get some more feedback, thanks.

If the 1:00 denotes the time, which it just might, that may mean that you have the constant power connected, which will only run the time.
I havent used Sony decks so I'm only guessing here, But have you checked you have main power, i.e. Accs power. Thats the power feed that actually works the unit. Power On etc.

Wiring looks OK

Th eblue wire out is Amp out, turns on an Amp when the unit is powered, this also doubles as an Antenna power switch if the unit doesnt have it as a feature... Means the antenna is up when you play a CD ... Yeah I know, just being cheap...

Are you getting power from the red wire, do you have a multimeter/test light, when the IGN is @ Accs.

The yellow wire will be the constant from the battery, whack a multimeter on that and check for constant 12volts of thereabouts, the red one should be the accessories, so with the key in "acc" check that you getting the power to the headunit that way.
The only real reason I can think that those two wires touching could cause the unit to turn on could be theres a fault closer to the headunit on the accessories/ignition wire, id be checking the fuse and fuse holder connections.
OK, im getting no voltage on yellow wire when car is off (Normal) and getting ~12volts on the yellow when the car is in acc. The Red wire has a very small amount of voltage (>1v) when the car is off or if the car is on. So thats my problem. What should be my next step?

OK
http://www.aussiemagna.com/forums/showthread.php?t=32761
Using the guide from this,
12. Red/Black --> +12 from battery --> Yellow ( constant power for clock/power for memory back up/ stations etc)
13. Blue --> Ignition --> Red ( PowerON/PLay)
On the magna loom
You can check the red/black wire for constant power regardless of where the key is.. Needs to go to the sony yellow
And the Blue wire from the magna needs to go to Sony Red
Also as per
http://www.installdr.com/Harnesses/Mitsubishi-Wiring.pdf

Ooops
Ok, i just checked all that. I also just realised that i can get power when i stick my multimeter straight from the blue magna wire to the red, i think it may just be a faulty wire.... Im gonna cut it and reconnect a new wire, ill keep everyone posted.
Well now i have 12v in both connections but the headunit still isnt coming on, i must be doing something wrong...

Check the power at the pins that plug into the Sony and check the fuse in the rear of the deck.
I used the multimeter to connect the yellow and red to their correct pins on the headunit, while the car was off and on acc. The only readout im getting now is 2v on the red while car is in acc position. This is straight from the connection the plugs into the headunit to the headunit. How would i also go about checking the fuse?

Most decks have a fuse at the rear. It doesn't sound like this is the problem tho.
If you have the multimeter set correctly at 12 volts dc, and it reads only 2 volts. I'll ask sparky to drop in to have a read.
In the mean time. Can you confirm with your meter that you have 12 volts at the fusebox. That's the the one for the car.
Can you check for a full 12 volts at other accessories like cig lighter etc.
I'd be be checking for a line of continuity, battery, fuses, plugs etc.
I think the access power runs through a relay too. But that's above my pay grade...
I can't think of any other reason you can only 2 instead of 12, other poor connections ( Unlikely ) or flat battery.
Ok, sorry. Im unsure how i got the reading of 2volts......, i double checked all my readings after resoldering the wires etc and as of now i have the following, correct readings.
Car off, Red : 0v
Car off, Yellow 12v
Acc on, Red 12v
Acc on, Yellow 12v
I honeslty have no idea what the problem could be. It must be the headunit....
im sorry for mucking you around, Thanks for your help so far shoot.

The yellow should always be showing 12 volts whether the car is off or on, thats the constant power so keeps things like the clock in check so thats not your problem. The red wire which is the accessory wire is working as it should aswell. Now these were figures at the pins right?
When I said check the fuses I was looking at this image.

I saw the plastic casing and thought they might have done a very useful thing and put fuses in there aswell, but it looks like they are just standard crimps.
Do you need to physically turn the unit on by pushing a button or pushing a "source" button? As from what ive assumed the power and acc wires are working the way they should, it could be a bad ground location however if the previous work with the factory wiring then this probably is not the cause.
Edit, this is how you turn the unit ON.
SOURCE/OFF button
Press to turn on the power/change the
source (Radio/CD/USB/AUX).
Press and hold for 1 second to turn off
the power.

There is a fuse just next to power/speaker plug input on the back of the sony, did you check that?

Thanks Wiggles, Ill see how everything turns out tonight...

I have tried turning iton as you mentioned, but no success. Also those casings are just crimps. The wiring looks quite different than that now though, many different things have been tried...

I tired sticking the multimeter into there, but i got no output. I dont think i was even making contact with the metal though.

You need to check that fuse though, if its blown it needs to be replaced for the unit to work.

If you got power at the head deck wiring then your head deck the problem not your car wiring. What sony head deck is it eg model? But like Shoot and peandham said most like a blown head deck fuse. Replace that fuse she will work.
It is a Sony CDX GT610UG. I have only had it a few days, would i be able to just pick up the fuse at supercheapauto?

The red thing is the fuse.

^ They are correct, you may need pliers to get it out as the are normally quite tight. I pulled a sneaky and stole your h/u model number from one of your photos.
P.S make sure you do not exceed the current fuse size, if it has a 10amp fuse, do not replace it with a 15amp fuse, there are also 2 types of mini blade fuses, (you have a mini blade fuse in the headunit) some have shorter metal prongs than others, but there are only 2 varieties readily available so if your not sure remove the fuse, check the link in it, if it needs replacing take it down the Supercheap or Autobarn or where ever and show them what you want.

Also if you looking for a spare fuse try inside fuse box of your car, as there should be a factory spare 10A fuse and fuse pullers :)
Ok, im gonna grab a new fuse from supercheap in the morning and let you know how it goes

Good to see it was only something simple.
I'm sure you have it fixed but did you connect the black (ground wire) to the chassis or ground wire? They aren't connected via the universal connecter.
Edit: didn't see the 4th page - lol but yeah I had a similar problem and realised I forgot to ground the stupid HU
