So..

After a little 4WDing over the weekend.. One of the guys has heard a killer knock on the way home and the car lost all power.

After a quick looksie.. There's a 50c piece sized hole in the side of the block along with oil, water and metal shavings where they should be.

So the question is..

Magna & Pajero..

Where are the main differences?
Can I use a Magna 74 in the Paj..?
The 3.8 swap.. Is it as simple as the magna swap or should I not bother attempting this with a Magna style 3.8 conversion..

6g75!

You're going to the trouble of taking the engine out and putting another in, do the few extra bits and put a 3.8 in.. you will not regret it. Mal has a lot of experience in this area so I suggest contacting him.

SuFz,

AFAIK the block is the same between the magna and the pajero. Its just the heads and all the Add on's.

A guy i know actually was making a 4x4 buggy. He had purchased a 94 SWB Paj that had a blown motor, stripped that out and bought a 3L magna motor which he then proceeded to swap it all over. Havent seen this guy for about 12 months but he seemed confident that it would work no worries.

If you dont mind me asking, what model Pajero are we taking? Reason I ask is the 6G74 NJ Pajero (~1996) is a much more complicated motor as opposed to the newer 6G74 NL/NM. The NJ motor is a DOHC where as the newer models are just SOHC and to be honest, looking in the bay can tell that they very similar to a Magna.

NM Pajero..

I'll post up a video once I leave the office and show you how he killed it.. Sheer stupidity, but he's got more money than brains..

Although probably a little off topic... I know first hand a TR/TS V6 will fit in a NH/NJ Pajero.
Block and heads are the same but everything - apart from the block and heads had to be changed though..
Probably the same situation with the 24 valve motor

The S4 motor is not a straight bolt in, the LHS head has no facility for the cam angle sensor to be mounted. This can be overcome with a bracket being made to mount elsewhere as long as you get the position 100% accurate

I am currently working on a 3.8 conversion for my NM, my motor only has 140k on the clock but I need a little more torque for towing my boat. From what I have seen and measured so far if using ALL Pajero externals etc you can do the 3.8 with the only parts I have not had an opportunity to measure up being where the engine mounts bolt to the block.

I suspect even the oil pump will need to be changed over, will not know until I get the engine out of a wreck I have here (which is also a perfect running motor)

Bugger..

Thanks for that Mal, appreciated!

Hopefully we will be doing the conversion to my Jero in a few weeks, will have 2 low mileage motors available once this is done. If not I will be able to confirm if this will work anyway

I'll keep an ear out..

As you can see the owner of the Pajero is a bit of a nutcase.. so he's eager to get back in the mud!

Mal:
How much for a Pajero engine? I need to rebuild mine.

Depends on how you want to do it to be honest

I need something here I can use for my conversion so I could either pull out what I have in the vehicle complte and get your old one back as an exchange or I can take off most of the accessories and send like that, either way I need back exchange of what ever is sent if that makes sense

Either way for the one I have here I am asking $1850.00 for it, is still in the car running, I drove the car for about 2 weeks on my trade plate before I started to stip it also and runs very well

Thanks Mal. I need only a new piston at worst, maybe a new bigend bearing at best, so the engine will be back to as it was. Cheaper to fix it up than to swap engines.
