Twice now during a demo derby I have lost foward gears, and could only use reverse. It's as if the gearbox is gearbox is getting too hot, and I have park, neutral and reverse only. When it cools down, I have drive again.

I run a external gearbox oil cooler from a 2nd gen auto, and I'm going to start running a 2nd one in series.

My question is loosing foward gears temporarily a symptom of too high oil temp?

Most likely overheating. If the gearbox regains forward gears after being left to cool, then heat seems like a very likely factor.
