Hi all,

I have recently started experiencing a momentary engine cut out. Twice now in the last 2 weeks and only happened under acceleration. It would cut out the same as switching my ignition off and then it would reawaken a split second later. Being my car is a manual, the cutting out also causes the car to slow down dramatically, so quite spooky!
Any thoughts would be much appreciated :)

Cheers

Little more info please, do you get any warning lights or just the complete car just go dead for a few seconds.

Usually if a car has a fuel pressure problem, you will lose power before it cuts out. If it loses power instantly it's normally an ignition problem. If you can make it cut out by pressing the accelerator down, but it comes back on when you lift your right foot, I'd suspect ignition problems, like a weak coil or power transistor failing in the distributor.

Thanks for all the replies!
I was thinking more along the lines of an ignition problem myself being I had the same line of thought as you Max. It is extremely instant! Its really a split second Mal... I didnt even get a chance to look at the dash before it was all good again.
As far as lifting my foot for the engine to run again, I cant be positive I did lift it. All happens so fast!

Check distributor. If it's a fouled spark plug or lead, then you would experience different symptoms.

Try to duplicate the situation - in a safe place of course. Try a hot engine, high/top gear, low revs, and flatten it. Most stressful on the ignition system.
(I bet you did lift off though, pretty instinctive to do so in that situation.)

I am leaning along electrical issue, perhaps loose battery terminal or similar.

I checked the distributor and found a fair bit of build up on the contacts, but Im assuming that couldnt be related. I did chip off a surprising amount though! Plugs and leads are very new anyway.
I have attempted duplicating the conditions but the car knows Im ready for it :/
Battery terminals are very tight...
Im really feeling loose connection of some sort and was hoping some ignition related loose connection was common?
